Connect Local, Support Local

We encourage teammates to connect to other local green organizations (including each other) and practice supporting local businesses at least once a week. Re-share a post, order curbside, make a donation to your favorite non-profit, or find a local business to make a purchase from! Let’s keep making St. Louis a greener, healthier, and more sustainable place to live, work, and learn! Have other or more specific actions to add to the Connect Local, Support Local Building Resilience Challenge please email Fbrandt@mobot.org.

Support Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

Hi Team! We're just about half way through the challenge and I'm so impressed with everyone's commitment and activities! We're going to host a virtual brown bag lunch to check in as part of the Virtual Earth Day Festival this coming Sunday, April 19 at noon. Mark your calendars and plan to join us (BYOL - Bring Your Own Lunch!).

Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

I think most of us understand the importance of pollinators in relation to our food systems, but maybe we don't always realize the role we have in protecting pollinators. I love having a garden that draws different kinds of pollinators. Right now, not much is blooming in my garden besides a baby serviceberry and some golden currant bushes and WEEDS. We let the weeds grow in what lawn is left - mostly because we're lazy and don't like to use things to kill them. But the bonus is that they also provide a food source for pollinators. In the reading I did today, I was reminded that I should leave some soil bare (I'm a big fan of mulch to keep the weeds down!) for burrowing bees to make a home and butterflies to access nutrients from the soil. Go pollinators!

I signed up for a CSA at Local Harvest Grocery - I was so excited to pick up my first share earlier this week. They have an excellent social distancing set up as no one is allowed inside the store. I got some great local veggies (spinach, arugula, zucchini, carrots, mushrooms), eggs and tea from the London Tea Room. Made a mushroom, spinach omelette last night. Glad to be supporting a local business and multiple local farmers.

Hey team! We are changing our name to St. Louis Goes Green to have a greater impact. OneSTL will be joining us and maybe a few other green organizations around town. All were welcome before, but hopefully with a more general name, we'll draw even more participants. Stay tuned!
