Tracy Borneman
"I have never felt right when the days and moments in my life, the every day of living, have clashed with my values. I want my being, my existence, my living – every action, every decision – to reflect my values. We bring existence into being with our actions... “The best propaganda is not pamphleteering, but for each one of us to try to live the life we would have the world live” — Mahatma Ghandi. Don't just be the change, live the ideal."

Tracy's actions
Forests
Buy recycled tiolet paper
Hard to do with tiolet paper shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic, but when I buy tiolet paper, I’ll make sure it has as much recycled content as possible to save trees.
Climate
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Oceans
Use beeswax wraps
I will use beeswax wraps for food storage instead of plastic containers and bags.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Food
Plant an organic garden
It doesn’t have to be large, but growing your own food is as local and sustainable as it gets
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Forests
Use Ecosia
I will use the Ecosia internet search engine, which plants trees for ever search I do.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 20 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Tracy Borneman 4/30/2020 11:33 PMSo true. And not just development, but spiritual and emotional sanity. I only feel the full reality of life when outside. Our world shrinks by magnitudes, not just physically, but mentally when we’re inside. There seems so much more possibility when out in the open world. -
Tracy Borneman 4/30/2020 11:28 PMA fun month of doing more to be eco friendly! -
Tracy Borneman 4/30/2020 7:12 AMWell, never did have the opportunity to buy recycled toilet paper - it was never in stock in store or online! Ah well. -
Tracy Borneman 4/28/2020 10:23 PMPlanted milkweed seeds this evening to help monarchs! Also just did some more online research to learn even more about these beautiful, endangered pollinators. -
Tracy Borneman 4/18/2020 10:03 PMDon’t think my “buy recycled toilet paper” challenge is going to happen this month - if I could find any in stores, I’d buy it!-
Tracy Borneman 4/28/2020 10:35 PMThanks for the heads up on The Who Gives a Crap brand, Maggie! I hadn’t seen them. I’m not a big online purchaser, but I’ll look into them. I really like the brand I can get at the store without the extra shipping direct to my house. Like you said, nice to not have plastic packaging, but bummer Who Gives a Crap individually wraps each roll. Besides, I use the plastic toilet paper pack packaging to line my trash can in lieu of a virgin plastic garbage bag. -
Maggie Ostdahl 4/21/2020 9:30 AMFWIW, online TP ordering is also halted while restocking occurs - but you may be interested in signing up for email lists to be notified when that occurs. another advantage to ordering TP is that many come without plastic packaging. my fave is still Who Gives a Crap, but there are now more "TP disrupters": https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/7/17/20688093/toilet-paper-no-2-tushy-who-gives-a-crap-charmin

Tracy Borneman 4/16/2020 11:07 PMIt was a lovely day today in my neck of the woods, so decided to take the day off and spend the whole day outside in my yard! (But my challenge log told me the max I could enter was 180 minutes - ah well.) It was a fabulous day! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Tracy Borneman 4/05/2020 2:52 PMIf I only have a a few items, I carry them out in my hands. Otherwise I put my purchases back in the store's cart or basket I used to bring them to the check-out. I make sure to always have a spare reusable bag in my purse or backpack for just such a time. My last resort is to accept a disposable bag, and then I use that bag to line my trash can. -
Tracy Borneman 4/05/2020 2:11 PMUnfortunately, I think today will be the last time I can complete the reusable bag challenge. We were just told we aren’t allowed to use our reusable bags anymore at the store due to COVID-19 transmission concerns. :(-
Tracy Borneman 4/05/2020 2:47 PMMy husband had a great idea to ask the cashier (or bagger) just to place your items back in the shopping cart and take the cart out to your car where you can place your items in your reusable bags in your car.

Tracy Borneman 4/04/2020 11:17 PMNot going out to shop very much these days so little opportunity to use reusable bags. But, reduce is better than reuse anyway!
