Melissa's actions
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Fresh Water
Water-Friendly Beauty Products
Avoid beauty products with micro beads or harsh chemicals that will feed into the ground and your water supply.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 1 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Melissa Canaviri 4/29/2020 5:00 PMMost of the seafood being consumed comes from countries that lack management laws. It is recommended to eat local and buy American seafood. There are several online resources to help people purchase seafood sustainably and safely. My diet choices don't necessarily fall within these guidelines but after reading these online resources and researching on my own, I will make an effort to change them for the better. A good general rule to know is that, smaller fish contain less mercury than larger varieties. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Melissa Canaviri 4/29/2020 4:41 PMThis is very true for me, especially now that we are spending more time indoors. I hope people will realize, during times like these, that spending time outdoors is great for relieving anxiety, stress, and depression. My mood is quickly improved after spending time hiking outside with people I love. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Melissa Canaviri 4/22/2020 7:21 PMEvery living thing has a purpose, no matter how big or small. Biodiversity boosts ecosystem productivity. Declining biodiversity can affect natural services such as water resources, climate stability, and access to food, wood products, medicinal resources, etc. Some ways I can encourage biodiversity are through helping bees by building them bee boxes, planting local flowers/fruit/vegetables, protecting natural habitats, and most importantly, by educating others and increasing public awareness.
