McKenzee's actions
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 15 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 2 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.

REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
McKenzee Chestnut 4/13/2020 12:21 PMCarson's quote definitely is true for me. I always feel a bit stressed and stir crazy if I can't get out into nature a few times a week. Just going outside and seeing the sun through the tree canopy, or listening to the animals and insects at night makes everything seems much more manageable. I believe that cultures that spend most of its time indoors find it harder to connect with nature. It's easy to learn a respect for other creatures when you can see them in their natural habitat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
McKenzee Chestnut 4/13/2020 8:30 AMIt helps me remember that my loved ones that aren't quarantining with me are still around and that we still share a bond, even if we aren't seeing each other right now. I know it can help others not feel so alone and can reduce the amount of anxiety that people are feeling these days because of the isolation and world events.
