Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
What environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?

I have been better about reducing water use by taking shorter, cooler showers. Consistently doing envionmentally friendly actions, with a clear goal in mind, is how to create better habits or replace old ones.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Fresh Water Eco-friendly Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

    Claudia Craig 4/14/2020 8:06 AM
Flooding is a concern with the French Broad River, as well as pollution in some areas.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Research Benefits of Biodiversity
How can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?

    Claudia Craig's avatar
    Claudia Craig 4/14/2020 7:56 AM
I can help protect biodiversity by purchasing products that are not harmful to the environment. Consuming less and following the principles of LNT will also protect wildlife habitats. Also, I can protect native species in my area and donate to wildlife conservation organizations.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Research a Wild Animal
What interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?

The Ili Pika is a rabbit-like mammal that lives in the mountains of northwestern China. Its population is declining due to climate change. The Ili Pika is extremely endangered, as only 29 have been spotted in the wild and the estimated population is less than 1,000. They can live up to 7 years and eat grasses, herbs, and other plants.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate Stay on the Ground
What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

    Claudia Craig's avatar
    Claudia Craig 4/08/2020 12:05 PM
Many flights are cancelled due to covid-19. I can avoid air travel in the future by traveling to places accessible by car.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Forests Forest-Friendly Foods
How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

    Claudia Craig's avatar
    Claudia Craig 4/07/2020 4:32 PM
It was easy to avoid drinking coffee, but harder to steer away from palm oil.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Forests Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

    Claudia Craig's avatar
    Claudia Craig 4/06/2020 2:44 PM
Exploring trails enhances my sense of place because it shows me what the world looks like right around where I live. Also, I notice more things about the natural environment and learn my way around.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Leave No Trace
Educator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?

    Claudia Craig's avatar
    Claudia Craig 4/05/2020 2:13 PM
For ecological problems, the area I would work on the most is combatting the loss of biodiversity. I would focus on preventing extinction, protecting wildlife habitats, and helping to reduce the impacts of climate change on species.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    People Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Claudia Craig's avatar
    Claudia Craig 4/05/2020 2:08 PM
It rings true for me that I need the natural world in my life. A culture that only spends time indoors will be disconnected from the environment and will miss out on the benefits nature offers for emotional/spiritual health.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    People Connect While Social Distancing
How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

    Claudia Craig's avatar
    Claudia Craig 4/03/2020 1:21 PM
Connecting with others makes me feel happy, and it lifts peoples' spirits in this unusual time, which can be stressful.
