Connect Local, Support Local

We encourage teammates to connect to other local green organizations (including each other) and practice supporting local businesses at least once a week. Re-share a post, order curbside, make a donation to your favorite non-profit, or find a local business to make a purchase from! Let’s keep making St. Louis a greener, healthier, and more sustainable place to live, work, and learn! Have other or more specific actions to add to the Connect Local, Support Local Building Resilience Challenge please email Fbrandt@mobot.org.

Support Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

My focus on supporting local businesses was the best thing I got from this ecochallenge.

I got plenty of outdoor time when I shut my computer off on April 26th after the Virtual Earth Day Festival came to an end.  But in doing so, I completely forgot about the ecochallenge.

I have been mostly stuck at my computer for days...  But at least this is my view!  And I can say Hi to neighbors walking by!

How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

It just feels so good to see other faces!  Also today in our brown bag lunch session, it was great to put faces to names of those on our team.

My husband just ordered lots of natives for our new rain garden!  We pick them up on  Saturday - cardinal flower, milkweed, and other stuff I can't remember right now.

I am working diligently on earthday365's Virtual Earth Day Festival and have little time for much else.   Check out our sneak preview here - www.earthday-365.org/coming-soon/
While you're hanging out at home, check it out every day from April 18-26 for our live content!  Visit all our sponsors and vendors virtually!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Kathy Dolson 4/12/2020 3:24 PM
Yes it does.  I love being outside, and although some days it's tough to find the time, I always feel better when I do get out.  Whether it's bike riding, hiking in a conservation area, or just walking in the neighborhood, it always feels good.

Oh yes! Nature is inspiring, and we forget that sometimes. I think we all were born to care about the environment, but most of us were led astray because modern luxuries are so tempting.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Support Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    Kathy Dolson's avatar
    Kathy Dolson 4/12/2020 3:20 PM
Well duh,.  Without pollinators we would have no food to eat!  We have been slowly adding more native flowers to our yard.  In the front yard, taking out grass and putting in milkweed, coneflower, wild bergamot, coreopsis, and many more!

I've been super busy helping to create our (earthday365) Virtual Earth Day Festival (coming soon!), but I'll try to make time to work on this.
