Action Track: Building Resilience

Support Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 45 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Forests

Explore My Area

I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Forests

Plant Trees

I will plant 1 native tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Weekly Meal Planning

I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 1 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.

Compost Food Waste

I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.

We did it! The best thing for me has been sharing daily challenges and triumphs in a uniquely challenging time. Thank you, dear friends!

My wrist and hand have been flared up so have been taking it a bit easier. I did get some of my seedlings transplanted into bigger pots yesterday. Still time to plant more!

The battle against invasive species is never-ending! This morning's watering was punctuated by having to pull more wheatgrass before the seeds are viable. I was cheered up by the discovery of more baby natives! And the snow buckwheat has sent up flower stalks; could this be another that has a longer bloom period under cultivation?!

I was going to say - wheatgrass?  Lucky you - but no.   OMgosh I went outside to pull some "popcorn flowers" and oh - how can the cheatgrass be so far ahead of me?!?!  Thought I'd done my 20 minutes outside pulling weeds - over an hour had flown by!!  Lots more in my future. :)

      Cheatgrass, I mean.

Happy Earth Day Eve! I hope to find time to join in some of tomorrow's virtual celebrations (though I still have masks to finish and get mailed out). I am proud to be part of a community that understands the inextricable connection between each of us and our beautiful planet. She needs us to nurture her back to health. . .

I finally got out into the fresh air and sunshine! We took the boys to Horse Lake and hiked up the trail from the lower parking lot. So many flowers in bloom, plus meadowlarks, magpies, swallows, sparrows, and hawks. My legs were wobbly on the hike down--we went just a little too far--but it felt so, so  good to be immersed in nature again.

And not pulling weeds!  Good on you - can't wait to see you!  Have spent a few hours pulling weeds on my town native plant landscape project.  Looks so much better . . . makes me grateful for cold snowy days all over again already.

Finally made it back outside to do some trantransplanting before the heat hits. 3 hrs later. . . : ) I was tired but happy.

Been busy writing this week: a guest blog about gardening with native plants for Wenatchee Naturalist--it's native plant month--and an article about the events 50+ years ago that led to the first Earth Day and lots of critical environmental legislation.

I still have my very 1st 50 year old sign - and hope to somehow share it yet for Earth Day 50 years later . . .

Feel free to come by and see the beautiful work - what worked over fall planting and what didn't.  Stay in touch!!

I haven't done any gardening since Thursday, when I overdid it. (I have a chronic condition that makes it impossible for me to do everything I'd like to.) On the bright side, I've been busy making more masks. I also ordered more hemp fabric. I'm excited to be sewing again. Writing is also on my agenda this week. I have fun educating, encouraging, and sometimes pushing people out of their comfort zone with words.

Look forward to more reading of yours Betsy and THANKS for the awesome masks!!  Wonder if JoAnn Fabrics carries - or would carry hemp material . . . may have to give them a call.
