The last day of the Eco-challenge. I'm happy to have been in this collective effort to bring more awareness and actions to our planet which so needs our attention. I do feel there is a lot more we could all do and feel committed to educating myself more especially now that we see how concerted efforts with the Pandemic makes such a difference and why not apply this concerted and forward looking effort to our environment.

This Eco Challenge is almost over but it remains and will remain in my consciousness in particular to be so much more resourceful and economical and to continue to take good care of my self on the physical level and to continue to research how I can help the environment and to take actions to do so.

Saw today the film Planet of the Humans produced by Michael Moore. The film is a kind of critique in a way of green renewables like Solar, Wind and BioMass showing how these renewables like Solar and Wind require an enormous amount of fossil fuel energy to build them and also in some cases destroy a lot of natural wildlife and biomass is very much about using wood from forests. There is more but I won't go into everything but to me one of the main messages is we, on this planet, cannot sustain life on this planet by endless use of resources and thinking we can live by endlessly acquiring more and more.

I am very mindful these days on what I eat and not wanting to waste any food. Every day I reflect upon what I will cook and make sure it's healthy. I also think about variety and make sure I'm eating different vegetables as much as possible.

As I reflect on this ecochallenge, I see how making commitments to change habits and making it public is a powerful tool to change in a positive direction both for oneself but more importantly or just as importantly for the health of the environment and wherever one is, you just take one step at a time and this creates its own momentum.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife Research Benefits of Biodiversity
How can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?

How can I encourage biodiversity by my own actions. Well, I can purchase local and organic foods which means less pesticides go into the soil that kill wildlife; I can of course donate money to organizations that foster biodiversity which I l already do. I can avoid eating meat or fish which I am now doing. I can avoid as much as possible plastic which uses oil and pollutes the environment.

Hal Harvey has said that 1/3 of carbon emissions comes from the industrial sector and that the three main ways we can address carbon emissions is by putting a price on carbon, research and development and standards for energy efficiency and emissions for industry.

Read an interesting article this morning about why carbon emissions still has not gone down a lot even though we are not flying, driving so much with the coronavirus, Transportation accounts for 20% of carbon footprint, but then there is the use of electricity for heating, lighting which has not fundamentally gone down and also the industrial world of making steel etc also has not changed. So we are still not seeing radical change. And when we speak about clear skies, the problem is carbon dioxide is not visible so they are not as clear as we perceive.
