Action Track: Building Resilience
Earth Day Action!: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 15 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
People
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 5 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.
Forests
Advocate for Forest Protection
I will contact 2 congress people or representatives to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
People
Write Letters or Emails
I will write 1 letter(s) or email(s) per day to a public official or company to advocate for planet-friendly and/or environmentally just policies.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 10 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Earth Day Action!: Research and Support Local OrganizationsWhy is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?
Laura Gardner 4/18/2020 2:26 PMI love our local farms and would hate to see them go out of business. I love that there is an option to get delivery from the New Bedford Farmers Market once a week. Last time I did it (two weeks ago), I got a bunch of veggies, plus a few treats. If we all support our local economy together then we can get through this!-

Laura Gardner 4/17/2020 11:28 AMI hate making phone calls or writing letters or emails to elected officials. It's really hard for me. Just because it's hard doesn't mean I shouldn't do it. The more I do it, the easier it will get. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Laura Gardner 4/15/2020 2:00 AMI love spending time outdoors. I love seeing what plants grow in a specific area, what animals live in that habitat, and what birds we can hear or see there. My family especially enjoys exploring all the Buzzards Bay trails in our area. Each one is a bit different. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Laura Gardner 4/15/2020 1:59 AMI connect with my students via virtual lunch bunch every weekday. I usually have between 7 and 15 kids show up to each of my 2 sessions. It's my very favorite part of the day to see their faces and read them a book out loud. We finished our first read alouds last week and this week we started up our second books. It's definitely helping me feel better and it gives my day a solid anchor to know I'm going to check in with my students. My own children enjoy it, too. Lena joins me for the 6th grade lunch bunch at noon and Miles joins me for the 7th/8th grade lunch bunch at 1 pm.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Laura Gardner 4/15/2020 1:57 AMBy committing to picking up litter every day, I'm getting outside more! By getting outside more, I'm saying hello to more people on my walk. I also get comments from people about picking up trash. Some people thank me and one guy even gave me a bunch of gloves. Since I got my trash grabber, I've received some admiring comments on that, too. I'm starting to know which neighborhoods and bushes catch trash in the wind the most. I'm loving this part of the challenge most of all. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Laura Gardner 4/13/2020 4:25 AMGot out early before it rained too hard! Have to walk the dog anyway...
