Cindy's actions
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 15 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
People
Call for Creation Care Advocacy
I will write an article for my congregation's e-Newsletter summarizing ways we can reduce global warming. Part of this involves being an effective citizen, electing and holding accountable our government representatives in regards to climate policy. Another is to join a movement & collaborate to amplify our voices. One way to do this is through our national church body's Advocacy Alerts. I signed up and took my first action this week.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 15 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local OrganizationsWhy is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?
Cindy Gross 4/30/2020 6:12 AMWe have supported a particular local restaurant because they share our values and make wonderful food available while doing so. They source ingredients locally and they utilize compostable containers for their food. In addition, during this time of quarantine, they have helped other local producers by sharing their products from their restaurant as well as their own. -
Cindy Gross 4/30/2020 6:08 AMI wasn't very faithful about checking in on a daily basis during this challenge, especially as the weather got nicer! However, I did learn some new things and change my behavior so that's progress. -
Cindy Gross 4/21/2020 9:07 AMI had read the Earth Day challenge of writing a love letter to Earth and shared the idea with my church's Green Team. We have decided to invite our congregation's members to do this and we will use them for a worship service in early June. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Cindy Gross 4/17/2020 2:59 PMOn yesterday's stroll outside, I took some photos of blooming lilacs, one of my favorite flowers and smells. There was even a swallowtail butterfly enjoying the lilacs which surprised me; seems to early to see butterflies! I do believe spending time outside is good for one's health - both the act of physically walking, forest bathing if there are trees, and admiring the beauty of creation which I know refreshes my spirit. The importance of spending time outside should be stressed more often. We care for what we love.

Cindy Gross 4/15/2020 12:41 PMI purchased a new spatula for scraping so scraps go to compost rather than rinsing down the garbage disposal. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Cindy Gross 4/07/2020 8:07 AMI realize water is such a precious, shared resource that requires all of us to do what we can to enjoy and protect this gift. I am learning more through EcoChallenge about how I can change my personal actions to conserve water. I have work to do during this challenging time of Covid-19 pandemic when we all are urged to wash our hands frequently to protect our health.
