Amy's actions
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to Earth
I will express my love and gratitude for our Earth by writing a love letter, poem, or song to Earth.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a trash pickup at a local river or beach that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Amy Hein 4/20/2020 9:32 AMThis week I am doing a cleanup along my non-crowded walking route. I'll be using the app called Clean Swell, which is by Ocean Conservancy. It's a super easy way to track what and how much trash you've removed from natural spaces while also being virtually part of a clean up and following social distancing protocols. On the app, I have made the clean up group name 'Making a Pint Sized Impact'. If you are looking to participate in a clean up this week, why not virtually join me :) Here's the website link if you'd like to know more https://oceanconservancy.org/trash-free-seas/international-coastal-cleanup/cleanswell/ -
Amy Hein 4/10/2020 1:06 PMHey Team! Great work so far on crushing those actions! :) If you have noticed that you just haven't been able to complete some of the actions you originally chose, don't get discouraged. Maybe it's a struggle due to current restrictions... for example, I selected planting at least 5 trees, however, I've realized that it may be tricky for me to find places to purchase trees to plant at this time. Instead, consider going back to the action board and choosing a different action. There are so many actions for this ecochallenge dedicated to spending time learning. I have been really appreciative of those ones thus far. -
Amy Hein 3/31/2020 6:22 PMHey ya'll!
Thanks for joining the best Ecochallenge team ever! ;) Our Ecochallenge starts tomorrow, so don't forget to get your eco-actions underway! You gain individual and team points by doing so. This year I seemed to choose many one-time actions rather than daily challenges. But that's okay, I am challenging myself to complete some harder things I would always brush over in the past, such as contacting companies to advocate for more sustainable packaging options. I also made this little Ecochallenge collage today to remind myself what I would be focusing on this month. I created it by rummaging through magazines (for probably too much time this afternoon...but who's to say when you're at home social distancing!). I looked for images that I thought represented each challenge then I pasted them on a piece of paper all together. If you're looking for some extra motivation, this is a creative activity that definitely helps... it's also quite therapeutic to look through the magazines!
Thanks for being a part of this! Happy Ecochallenge!
