Action Track: Building Resilience
Earth Day Action!: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 15 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a trash pickup at a local river or beach that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food
Advocate For More Food Options
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for local and/or organic food options in my state and/or community.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Fresh Water
Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement
I will spend at least 15 minutes a day using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Fresh Water
Water-Friendly Beauty Products
Avoid beauty products with micro beads or harsh chemicals that will feed into the ground and your water supply.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Erin Holbrook 4/30/2020 1:56 PMI wasn't aware of certain animals being nocturnal (fox!) so that was fun! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Erin Holbrook 4/30/2020 1:55 PMthey're the future! We need them for certain species to survive and help other parts of the eco-system to thrive -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Erin Holbrook 4/30/2020 1:55 PMIt makes me hopeful to do a community clean up - like we're not the only ones who care and are trying to take care of our community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Use a Reusable Water BottleUsing the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?
Erin Holbrook 4/30/2020 1:54 PMI can investigate my local area and start working with local organizations to advocate for better processes if we're impacted. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Erin Holbrook 4/30/2020 1:53 PMthey are the natural habitat for loads of things that go into our food -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Erin Holbrook 4/29/2020 12:51 PMI think the use of rain barrels would be helpful for things like lawn watering, gardening, car washing rather than using water from the tap. More education and incentives about such options (and making them affordable) would be great. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Erin Holbrook 4/29/2020 12:50 PMWe conserve as much as we can and teach our daughter to do the same! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Get Involved in the Water Justice MovementWho is affected by polluted water or a lack of access to water in your region? How are they affected?
Erin Holbrook 4/29/2020 12:49 PMI think there's a lot of wildlife that's impacted; our main water source is as clean as its been since people originally settled here, but there's more to do. I have joined a local organization to find out more about improvements and access to clean water for people in our area. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
Erin Holbrook 4/29/2020 12:48 PMI've been watching shows on agricultural shifts over the last couple of hundred years, the drivers behind demand and local sourcing, etc. Fascinating topic, don't know that I have many answers. Looking forward to learning more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Advocate For More Food OptionsWhat efforts would help food insecure regions have access to local, seasonal foods?
Erin Holbrook 4/29/2020 12:09 PMI'm proud of the local food bank and the co-op farms that have popped up in the area that are focused on access to growing and knowledge sharing about more diy local sustainability
