Julia Johnson 4/23/2020 5:42 PMI've been making masks for my family, and one of the eco-friendly things about that is that they are re-usable (duh!), but I also found a company that sells organic fabrics that are printed to order with water-based materials. Textile manufacturing is really tough on the environment (a lot of nasty chemicals and pollutants), so this was a nice way to support this business. Printing to order means there is no waste, too. Also, they can support artists and designers who provide the designs they print! Some of them are pretty amazing! Here's my mask fabric and me in my mask... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Julia Johnson 4/23/2020 5:10 PMRaising meat is a resource demanding endeavor - which it why it is more accessible to the affluent. It takes a lot of water, land, and feed to raise meat. Excess consumption of meat can contribute to health issues like obesity and heart disease. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Julia Johnson 4/23/2020 4:54 PMI live across the street from Balboa Park (San Diego's answer to Central Park). It is my favorite place in San Diego (except the beach). It was the one place I made sure I visited when I came to visit while I lived in the Bay Area. It makes me feel "home" and now I live right across the street! :o) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Julia Johnson 4/23/2020 4:51 PMAfter spending more than a month indoors, it was glorious to get outside in the sun!
