I'm so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this team (thanks Hope G. for inviting me). I have learned so much from each of your posts and the challenges/reflection questions offered through the challenge. During this uncertain time of COVID and needing to stay at home, my daily check-in with the Ecochallenge was a welcome addition to my new daily routine and it was great to have daily goals that motivated me to learn new ways to connect to Earth and make a positive impact.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Support Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    Jill Jonas's avatar
    Jill Jonas 4/28/2020 3:32 PM
Pollinators are needed for plant reproduction and food. This then results in plant seeds. Seeds are needed to have the next generation of plants which is needed to provide food for basically everything to continue to exist.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Research Benefits of Biodiversity
How can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?

Promote wildlife by setting up bird and bat houses, control invasive weeds on your property, plant native plants in your landscape, use environmentally friendly and natural methods to control pests in your garden and clean your home, reduce consumption, and choose environmentally friendly transportation options.

How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

Planting a tree deepens my connection to the earth and is an act of stewardship. When I plant a tree, I feel a sense of accomplishment and it brings me joy to watch it grow and provide care to it as needed.

What environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?

Although, I often eat vegetarian for breakfast and lunch, I've also began to plan more vegetarian family dinners. We've all grown fond of the simplicity of lentils or beans and rice with veggies and usually have for them 2-3 dinners a week.  Everyone appreciates how these meals benefit the environment and makes them feel so that will help make this a healthy habit!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

Since becoming a home owner a little under 2 years ago, I have been wanting to build a compost area. This challenge pushed me to get started and stop overthinking it. I simply raked leaves into a pile and then started saving and adding food scraps. It has been rewarding to make use of my household's fruit, veggie, coffee/tea, scraps/waste. Can't wait to be able to add it to my garden later this summer to nourish my fall veggies!

    Wildlife Research a Wild Animal
What interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?

Learning some interesting facts about the American Black Bear was so fun. The ones listed here are my favorites. Although we may primarily associate bears with a large roaring sound, they are usually silent. They also grunt, mumble, squeak, huff, bellow, hum, moan and purr. Although bears mate in May or June, the egg implantation is delayed until October/November. When the cubs are born in January/February, the mother is hibernating and often doesn't even wake up for the birth. When the cubs are born, they are naked and blind and only weigh 7 ounces. They usually stay with their litter mates and mother for 16-17 months and the mother doesn't mate again until she parts from her cubs (every other year). Bears are becoming more coming more common in Missouri (South of I-44 corridor mainly), thanks to reintroduction efforts in Arkansas.
