Action Track: Building Resilience
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 10 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 10 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).

Create Homemade Face Covering to Help Prevent the Spread of Coronavirus
The CDC now recommends wearing a cloth face covering (such as a homemade mask or scarf) when you’re in public places where it’s difficult to maintain social distancing. These are places where there are usually more people — for example, at pharmacies and grocery stores. Now's your time to get creative while also doing social good and supporting public health. Breathable fabric like cotton, silk, or linen is recommended. Repurpose an old T-shirt, bandana, pillowcase, handkerchief, or scarf. You can sew the fabric into a mask, tie it around your face, or fold it and use hair ties for ear loops. Share your final product on your favorite social channels to inspire friends and family to do the same.
Food
Pantry Scavenger Hunt
If necessity is the mother of invention, but you're at a loss for what to make for lunch or dinner, fall back on three core Intuit values: Be Bold, Be Passionate, and Deliver Awesome. Gather up ingredients you already have on hand, and get creative! If possible, try focusing on a dish composed of vegetable or grain-forward ingredients.
Climate
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 2 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support A Sharing Economy
To reduce my consumption and waste and support my community, I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 120 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Climate
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
Sean Kinghorn 4/28/2020 3:53 PMI watched Michael Pollan's documentary based on his books "Omnivore's Dilemma" and "In Defense of Food". -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Sean Kinghorn 4/28/2020 3:36 PMI've been reading David Quammen's "Spillover" and have learned a ton about which animals - bats, chimps, etc - have caused zoonotic viruses to crossover into humans. And in almost every case, it happened when humans disturbed natural habitats. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Sean Kinghorn 4/28/2020 3:34 PMYes, it absolutely rings true. When I'm stuck inside all the time, I feel disconnected from the real world and nature. Getting outside and hiking, biking etc makes me feel like part of the larger ecosystem and realize people are just another species on our planet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Sean Kinghorn 4/28/2020 3:33 PMOur family purchases carbon offsets each year to support climate action and biodiversity. Also eating planet-friendly foods is a big focus of mine. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Sean Kinghorn 4/28/2020 3:32 PMYes, now that our family has been biking so much more, it makes us feel more connected to our local community as we are moving slower, not feeling so rushed, and really embracing our area more. -
Sean Kinghorn 4/02/2020 6:36 PMI love the ecochallenge platform. A lot of things I do on an everyday basis, so it's a good reminder that it makes a difference. There are other small steps that I'm taking due to the challenge that remind me that - everyone and every little step matters.-
Erika Johnson 4/07/2020 7:56 PMCouldn't agree more! It's a great reminder of all of the things that I am doing on an everyday basis already and also provides great ideas of things I could be doing more of or differently to promote sustainable habits - simple, everyday steps to promote positive change in the long-run. I love the team/community aspect!

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy CreditsYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Sean Kinghorn 4/02/2020 9:52 AMMy home is 100% solar powered. I've also taken steps to reduce my demand by replacing all incandescent and CFL lighting with LEDs.
