Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect Local, Support Local
We encourage teammates to connect to other local green organizations (including each other) and practice supporting local businesses at least once a week. Re-share a post, order curbside, make a donation to your favorite non-profit, or find a local business to make a purchase from! Let’s keep making St. Louis a greener, healthier, and more sustainable place to live, work, and learn! Have other or more specific actions to add to the Connect Local, Support Local Building Resilience Challenge please email Fbrandt@mobot.org.
Wildlife
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 60 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 3 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Food
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Art Lum 4/30/2020 5:00 PMWhat a fun challenge that re-energized my green activities. I learned a lot and enjoyed watching our collective actions that help take care of the earth. I will do my best to keep going even though the challenge is over. -
Art Lum 4/27/2020 5:48 PMThe bad news is some other teams accomplished enough actions to bump our team down a notch. The GOOD news is some other teams accomplished enough actions to bump our team down a notch! It's win/win for the environment. Go Green! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Art Lum 4/27/2020 5:29 PMI pick up trash around the neighborhood while walking our dog. The challenge helps me remember to bring an extra bag for trash and a pair of gloves. The neighborhood looks great especially with all the colors of spring here. I wish everyone would help keep our places beautiful. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Art Lum 4/26/2020 8:14 AMIt's interesting to see examples of how our influence on a single species can affect a chain of others. Protecting climate change is a huge way to help preserve biodiversity. Small ways to help include purchasing wisely and other sustainable habits like the three Rs and using native plants. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Art Lum 4/24/2020 1:36 PMYears ago, I couldn't believe it when my cousin said her family didn't eat leftovers. Although since then I've had my own kids and can understand how they can be picky eaters. Still, my kids eat leftovers!
We've been making a lot of meals at home with very little waste. But this is a time when local restaurants are hurting, so now and then we can take a break from the regimen and add a little revenue to the local economy. Happy Friday!-
Laina Jaffe 4/27/2020 6:38 AMFood waste, believe it or not, has a bigger footprint than meat I think—don’t quote me, I’m not totally sure. So it’s good to reduce animal products, but if you do that and waste fruits and vegetables in the process it defeats the purpose! Reducing your food footprint isn’t as simple as you’d think, but it’s possible!

Art Lum 4/23/2020 5:43 PMWow, Wash U. is keeping pace and catching up to us! Or maybe we both catch up to Nebraska? Go Green! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Art Lum 4/21/2020 7:52 PMI find it satisfying to see how much more the recycling bin has in it than the trash bin. For food waste, you get to see the amount of waste that gets carried to the compost pile and diverted from the landfill. Maybe someday it could be used as fuel for a Delorean. -
Art Lum 4/12/2020 4:59 PMOur team is in the top ten now. Awesome possum!-
Emily Andrews 4/14/2020 6:21 AMGreat work everyone! This is so exciting!

Art Lum 4/11/2020 9:28 AMHere's a full week of compost matter. I learned from the action resources to layer grass and leaves to help the process. It's quite a mixture this week with fennel, bok choy and cranberries among other things. I've composted in past years, but this challenge has renewed my efforts. -
Art Lum 4/02/2020 6:21 PMI'm new to this event as well. I enjoyed learning about each of our teams organizations by going to their web sites. It's inspiring to know that these groups are working on environmental issues in our area! I found links to each site on my dashboard in the purple "Action Track: Building Resilience" Learn More button.
