How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

I'm lucky enough to have just moved next to a beach. It's easy to get stuck indoors and behind a computer or head down looking at your phone. Taking the time to go outside and explore has helped me find a sense of place and home. This new place is my new home and, like my apartment, home is something that I want to take care of and take pride in. I didn't develop this sense of place until I went outside and experienced my surroundings and all it had to offer.

    Forests Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

I don't have any disposable cups in my house and I don't use the disposable/comostable hot cups at work for coffee. This goes for all the dishes I use at home. I used to live in a house that constantly used paper plates for every meal. Just seeing all that waste and knowing that I'm saving just as much waste by not using a disposable cup makes me feel great. I rather throw a mug in the dishwasher than contribute to more waste.

What environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?

I hate having tons of dishes to wash so I plan my meal preparation to use as few dishes as possible. Instead of using multiple cutting boards I cut herbs and veggies first, then prep my meat on the same board. I also try to cook everything in the same pot or as few pots as possible. Saves on clean-up time, water, soap and elbow grease. Using the dishwasher also saves on water and I don't turn it on until it's completely full.

    Oceans Learn about Our Oceans
What is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?

I watched "Chasing Coral" and learned a lot about how a healthy ocean is key to supporting life. The oceans cover 70% of the earth's surface and absorb 90% of the heat in the earth's atmosphere, including the excess heat caused by climate change. Excess heat is killing coral in alarming rates, destroying ecosystems for fish and marine life living in the area. There are so many actions we can take to help fight climate change and I will start by reducing the energy we use in the house. Educating yourself and others about actions that we can take will make a difference.

How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

My family likes to throw out items, especially milk, by the sell by dates and this exercise is a good reminder to make better decisions. Although I've always known that items last longer than use, sell and best by dates, it's great to refresh on the info.  Making better decisions about when to throw out items helps to make the best use of what we have in our pantries and refrigerators; especially right now as the country is staying at home and practicing social distancing. I'm also finding myself freezing more items for later and looking up ways to preserve my herbs.
