Mary Beth's actions
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Forests
Plant Trees
I will plant 1 native tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 3 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 1 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.

Mary Beth Waltman 4/30/2020 9:58 AMI have loved this challenge so much! -
Mary Beth Waltman 4/29/2020 7:47 AMI plan on line drying some laundry outside on this beautiful day. I have really enjoyed seeing my power bill decrease since I started using natural forces like the sun and wind to dry my laundry versus the electrical expenditures of a dryer. I still use it if I have to but I try not to need to! -
Mary Beth Waltman 4/28/2020 6:40 AMEnjoying a wonderful bowl of yogurt, granola, and fresh NC grown strawberries this morning. Add a little coffee in my mug and you have a breakfast of champions! Way to go everyone on your Earth Day Eco-challenge! We are almost there :) -
Mary Beth Waltman 4/27/2020 7:20 AMI am excited that today is the last day in the foreseeable forecast to have a low in the 40s. This means I can re-plant my green bean, zuchinni, okra, limas, and cucumber seeds. Fingers-crossed for a better outcome this time. -
Mary Beth Waltman 4/27/2020 7:18 AMI forgot to post yesterday, but I spent about 5 hours outside working in the area behind my shed that has grown up too much. I plan on reclaiming the space for a greenhouse that I have started building. -
Mary Beth Waltman 4/25/2020 6:59 PMI have been working in the yard a lot during this time. I've switched to taking yard debris in bags to the dump to using large trash cans. This is reducing plastics! -
Mary Beth Waltman 4/24/2020 1:01 PMToday I took some time to take pictures of some of the blooming flowers in my yard. -
Mary Beth Waltman 4/23/2020 3:08 PMI have a beautiful iris that is blooming. I will post a picture tomorrow. I had cleared out a flower bed of some weeds and it started to bloom. I do not think I have ever seen this particular one bloom. It has the most dynamic colors. -
Mary Beth Waltman 4/22/2020 8:04 AMMy favorite environmentally friendly habits are home gardening and growing my own food, recently the use of a clothesline in my backyard to harness the power of the wind where I live, also recently I have started cutting back on the meats that I eat that are not sustainable. It is a struggle and some days I do not accomplish all of my goals, but I know that by trying I am making an impact. Here is to everyone trying! Have a great Earth Day all! -
Mary Beth Waltman 4/22/2020 7:55 AMWhile walking back from feeding my chickens this morning I noticed that some of my starter plants have put on some new growth and might survive the frostbite that the got with that last chill. Here is to gentle rains and sunny days! Happy Earth Day Everyone!
