Julie's actions
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 5 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Participant Feed

REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Julie Pancheva 4/15/2020 10:14 AMSocial contacts definitely help in coping with this situation. It is a please for me to hear the stories of my close relatives and friends because talking is the best way of expressing yourself. I love the fact that in the 21st century we can connect with everybody no matter how far they are. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Julie Pancheva 4/15/2020 10:11 AMMy father is a big supporter of picking up litter. We do this often not only because it connects us to our community, but it saves the environment as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Julie Pancheva 4/15/2020 10:08 AMI use a cart. This is a good way of carrying your things because when you put them in your car and stop by your house, you can use a bag from your house. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Julie Pancheva 4/10/2020 3:58 PMI made a research about mountain lions. The reason why I chose this animal is because I love the forests of Northern California and this is the home of thousands of mountain lions. An interesting fafct I learned about this animal is that it holds the record for the animal with most names. Except for the name I used, people also call them puma concolor, cougar, panther. My favorite things about this animal are hidden in its power and speed. The speed up to 40-50 mph. We can compare their speed to the speed of a leopard - 36 mph. Also, I love their majestic look. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Julie Pancheva 4/10/2020 11:23 AMIt is a worldwide fact that eating meat is a symbol of wealth because it takes a lot of resources to feed the animal you are going to consume later. This is why it impacts our planet. For example, it takes around 7-8 kilograms of grain to raise a cow, when it only takes one kilogram of grain to make bread. Therefore, raising an animal has a bigger ecological footprint than raising the food you are going to consume later. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Julie Pancheva 4/06/2020 10:04 AMFirst, our planet is facing water crisis meaning that there is not enough fresh water resources. My region/household can prepare for changing water situations by saving water. Some ways of saving water would be: taking shorter showers, turn off the water while brushing your teeth or the dishes, change buying habits, use less water outdoors and many more. -
Julie Pancheva 4/05/2020 10:18 AMI just finished my conversation with the 5th person for today. I called my two cousins, my grandmother, my aunt and my friend from Bulgaria. I feel better that I saw them and spoke to them because everybody needs somebody in these tough moments.
