COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates

I will spend at least 20 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Fresh Water

Toilet top bidet

I'm using a toilet top bidet to give everyone in the house a fresh out of the shower feeling, without having to take as many showers just for that purpose. We're also using less paper, and that saves water too!

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Fresh Water

Eco-friendly Gardening

I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Fresh Water

Dishwasher Efficiency

I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Earth Day Together!

Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations

I will spend 30 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Forests

Plant Trees

I will plant 1 native tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Forests

Choose Better Wood Products

I will only purchase wood and paper products from ecologically certified sources like Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Forests

Forest-Friendly Foods

I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Building Resilience

Support A Sharing Economy

To reduce my consumption and waste and support my community, I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.

DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Building Resilience

Support Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Oceans

Support Organic Growing Methods

I will buy organic cotton and foods grown without the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

    I've learned a lot, including this: https://stopmicrowaste.com/en/tenfortheocean
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Fresh Water Dishwasher Efficiency
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Albert Pope's avatar
    Albert Pope 4/29/2020 10:38 AM
I believe awareness and behaviors around water are the biggest impact items. One thing I often lament is the woefully inadequate storm water treatment capacity in our towns on bodies of water. We need to prioritize keeping our open water clean.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Forests Plant Trees
How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    Albert Pope's avatar
    Albert Pope 4/29/2020 10:36 AM
Planting trees gives me a feeling of moral superiority. Just kidding -kind of.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Forests Choose Better Wood Products
Beyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?

    Albert Pope's avatar
    Albert Pope 4/29/2020 10:35 AM
Forests offer food and adventure. I am a forager, and love spending time in the forest, including picking up litter.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Albert Pope's avatar
    Albert Pope 4/29/2020 10:34 AM
Preventing food waste. Sell by dates are not use by dates, and even then, a use by date can often be extended with good refrigeration.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Fresh Water Eco-friendly Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

    Albert Pope's avatar
    Albert Pope 4/29/2020 10:13 AM
Flooding seems to be the biggest problem around here. Urban sprawl is the problem. If we didn't sprawl, it would be wetlands, and flooding wouldn't be an issue!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
Why is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?

    Albert Pope's avatar
    Albert Pope 4/29/2020 8:44 AM
Supporting the local economy keeps wealth within your locale. It also strengthens relationships, and reduces the carbon intensity of product and service procurement through less travel and transport time/distance.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Support Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    Albert Pope's avatar
    Albert Pope 4/27/2020 7:26 AM
Biodiversity! Our agricultural industry also needs pollinators.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Forests Forest-Friendly Foods
How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

    Albert Pope's avatar
    Albert Pope 4/27/2020 7:25 AM
Honestly, it's easy because I can afford to buy fancier sustainable chocolate and I don't really drink coffee. This could be a tough one for someone who drinks regular drip coffee at the office everyday.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Oceans Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Albert Pope's avatar
    Albert Pope 4/27/2020 7:00 AM
I've stopped using vegetable bags, and am using reusable shopping bags.

I love our reusable produce bags! Once we were already bringing reusable shopping bags, it was an easy switch to bring those along, too.
