  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
How does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?

I recently watched an American Experience documentary about Norman Borlaug who created a hybrid wheat that could withstand all sorts of hostile growing conditions. His desire was to address nutrition and food shortages in developing countries but the unintended consequences of his actions created a model of industrial agriculture that we have today - one that is water and fertilizer intensive and creates many environmental and social hazards.

Climate Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

As a young girl I was profoundly influenced by Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring". Her words still strike me deeply "the more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction".

I support a new grocery in my neighborhood in Boston. They opened just before the Covid outbreak occurred. They conducted many focus group sessions to understand the needs of our diverse neighborhood and so far have done a great job providing essentials for us and improving the block. I give the staff homemade masks so they can stay healthy and volunteer to deliver groceries for elders. They are more than just a grocery, they care for us in many ways.

I spend as much time as possible outdoors and love the practice of forest bathing, walking in open pastures and fields, or along the coast absorbing all the beauty and mystery of  life around me.
