How does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?

Food sovereignty  reminds of a concept from years ago presented in "Small is Beautiful, Economics as if People Mattered".  It presented the concept of building from one person upward, creating a world build on people's needs, people's values, not the needs and values of Wall Street.  What a very different world we would live in if we truly could do that, even some of the time.

I just added that to my reading list, it looks so powerful! Thank you Maryann!

I used to have that little book. I think my husband knew the author. Looked for it just now but couldn't find it. It makes so much sense that all the bet things arise from the ground up and not the top down.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

In the sunshine ... in my garden ... capturing images of butterflies and emerging flowers.  I cannot imagine a more perfect spring.  I leave my phone inside, and sometimes my two kitties come to frolic with me, cavorting in the clover.  Sadly, I wave at passers-by clothed in masks, hiding their smiles.  In my garden I don't wear a mask, so I can toss out a huge smile to everyone who passes.

    come …
    ye young nymphs
    and sage women too
    come …
    catch the mystery
    of Brigid's sacred pool

    emerald dragonflies
    settle
    in the moon shadow's cleft
    while Venus' star dust
    encircles our breasts

    the corn silk moon crested
    ere the fairy fog descended
    and laid all our grey
    discontent
    to rest

What interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?

I discovered there are dozens and dozens of different kinds of bunnies, some big, some small, some hoppers, some swimmers.  I had no idea they were such a diverse species.  While they are preyed upon by many, they also eat vegetation themselves and help spread fertilizer and seeds.

    Food Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

    MaryAnn Shank's avatar
    MaryAnn Shank 4/13/2020 11:27 AM
I have finally ordered my composter.  Should be here in a week or two.  Now that I have a real garden, I have more places to use it than I can ever create from my own compost, so I will still need to buy compost, but that's ok.  At least I won't be sending stuff to the dump when it has a higher purpose!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Forests Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

    MaryAnn Shank's avatar
    MaryAnn Shank 4/01/2020 10:52 AM
Actually, it is easy saving a mug when I can't go to my coffee house!  It will be more of a challenge when I can get out and around again, but a challenge that I will seriously.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Support Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    MaryAnn Shank's avatar
    MaryAnn Shank 4/01/2020 10:51 AM
I started my pollinator garden last year, with dozens of hours of research, soil prep and planting.  I was so proud of my little garden.  I am expanding it by three-fold this year.  The Plant Connection is my primary source for plants. They come to the Ashland Growers Market, and it is great fun visiting their row of greenhouses, picking out plants hither and yon.
