Claire 's actions
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 1 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
Bringing home unique souvenirs from trips you’ve enjoyed is meaningful, and giving people unique gifts from other places is fun. Seek souvenirs and gifts that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 3 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Food
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.

Claire Simon 4/30/2020 6:52 PMOn the last day of ecochallenge I am looking back on this past month and reflecting. Ecochallenge really did keep me going outside and feeling connected with nature and my fellow challengers. I hope to carry many of the lessons I learned forward with me. Thank you ecochallenge! Stay safe and healthy! -
Claire Simon 4/28/2020 9:59 PMFinally, a nice warm day! Walked around Humboldt park today admiring the Chicago skyline. What a breath of fresh air, I can’t wait until it’s warm out! -
Claire Simon 4/27/2020 8:43 PMIt finally felt warm today!!! It was such a joy to get outside for a bit. I miss hanging out in parks with people, I miss hugging my friends. This is so hard! But we keep going...sending love to all my fellow ecochallengers today! -
Claire Simon 4/25/2020 9:34 PMWent for a lovely walk in the drizzle today and ended up running into some old coworkers which brightened my day -
Claire Simon 4/24/2020 9:55 PMToday was another gloomy day in Chicago. It’s really challenging to keep spirits up during this time. Trying to give myself space to feel what I am feeling but also not let everything that is happening overwhelm me. Ecochallenge remains a great way to keep me engaged with positive, incremental things I can do each day to protect this world we live in. -
Claire Simon 4/23/2020 4:59 PMDidn’t manage to get out of the house today but found some calm taking care of my house plants. Nature even on a small at home scale really is the best -
Claire Simon 4/22/2020 11:47 AMThe beginning of another week in quarantine...sigh. This is definitely not getting better/easier with time. I sincerely hope we start seeing an improvement soon. Going to focus on getting out of the house every day this week to keep my spirits up. -
Claire Simon 4/22/2020 11:45 AMI have been teaching English classes virtually to friends in Ecuador which has been a cool way to connect to my old home. It’s interesting to hear how different countries are dealing with this pandemic. People in Ecuador are not allowed to leave their houses after 2 PM for any reason! -
Claire Simon 4/22/2020 11:42 AMHappy earth day everyone! Was able to sneak outside for a 3 mile walk and pick up some trash while out to celebrate this earth day. -
Claire Simon 4/18/2020 9:21 PMSpent a gorgeous day outside exploring the surrounding neighborhoods while maintaining social distancing by...geocaching! I highly recommend this form of entertainment right now, if you have never done it, check it out!
