Rose's actions
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 5 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 2 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 2 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Research Local Climate Issues
I will spend at least 15 minute(s) a day researching climate issues or climate solutions in my local area and share with others through my team feed, social media, or conversations with my peers.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 20 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 45 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Rose Slick 4/27/2020 12:19 PMThis is totally true for me. In a culture that spends most of its time indoors, it is so easy to be taken away from nature and feel very separated from it. However, indoors, almost everything we see/experience/interact with was more by humans. Going outside brings us into contact with things that maybe no one has been able to explain, or things that are so much more nuanced and detailed than anything a human could create. It's important for expanding our minds even when most of the time, you don't even realize that's happening. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Rose Slick 4/20/2020 6:13 AMConnecting with others is almost always a two way street- just by having a simple conversation with another person, you're broadening your view and getting out of your own head and situation. That can give each person an important break from thinking about their own issues, or shed light on new ways of looking at things. I've also found it important to allow myself or others to just be goofy and laugh. It doesn't have to/shouldn't always be intense and serious conversations! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Rose Slick 4/14/2020 7:20 AMBeing inside, you have access to TV, internet, Netflix, etc, which can be wonderful for connecting you to the rest of the world, but not as good for "being where your feet are." By going outside, your experiences are by and large only about what is happening directly around you. You can see what other species live in the same place as you, cope with the same environmental challenges as you, and share your space. It both brings your focus to one point (where you are at that moment) and broadens your view of things, because you become more aware of other forms of life around you. -
Rose Slick 4/09/2020 6:10 AMI've found it pretty difficult to remember to check in every day on here while working from home! Trying my best and leaning into the challenges around researching animals/biodiversity/climate change...aka things I can do from my couch! -
Rose Slick 4/01/2020 9:21 AMFirst day of the challenge! It's so nice to see everyone on here since we can't really see each other at work. Is there anything you all would really like to try and do as a team for this challenge? I was thinking we could have a virtual watch party, but would love to coordinate some other things too, if people have ideas!
