one of my favorite ecotips is to purchase package free shampoo and conditioner as well as soap! Naples soap company offers a wide selection but they can be found all over. It is a simple way to minimize the amount of plastic and waste in your household!

One of favorite ways of being more environmentally friendly is by using reusable bags when shopping. To do this I purchased several cloth bags to replace plastic or paper bags at the store. I also took it one step further by ordering reusable produce bags from Amazon to eliminate even more plastic!

I never realized how many of my everyday meals were vegetarian until I started doing this challenge. It has also taught me a lot about how even what I chose to eat impacts the environment.

Just sent an email to some campus officials to advocate for plastic free packaging and the elimination of plastic bags at FGCU. Even though I was hidden behind my screen, I still got nervous about what to say. However, after I sent the email it felt good to put effort towards an important cause!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    People Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

The unknown and the mysterious have always provoked fear in people. however there is so much to discover and observe. Developing a relationship with the earth and its creatures allows us to expand our emotions to things other than ourselves. Implications may be a lack of empathy and respect for the environment in ways of life. Future of development for these indoor cultures most likely don't have the earth's best interest.

    People Connect While Social Distancing
How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

Social distancing can be really hard for some. I personally cope with anxiety and know how isolation can easily let illnesses like that spiral. Its good to talk to others about our emotions and let them out rather than stay bottled up. Also, it can just be comforting to hear a familiar voice and laugh with an old friend during these uncertain times. We are all human and all going through this, if we look out for one another things will be better.

    People Volunteer in my Community
How does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?

Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community. It gets you involved in something bigger than yourself. For my 10 hours of service, I fashioned recycled plastic grocery bags into plarn, plastic-yarn. This plarn is then made into sleeping mats for the homeless. Not only do I get to give to people in need, but being in this project helps me practice sustainability and better the earth.

How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

Picking up litter shows you the physical impact humans are bestowing on the earth. It made me feel more connected and responsible for taking care of the planet. Seeing the trash lying around brought on guilt and gave me a purpose.
