Amber's actions
Forests
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 25 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 1 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 120 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Amber Wilson 4/23/2020 8:30 AMLyft SF is starting to catch up - they are only 1000 points behind us! Let's finish this challenge out as strong as we started it. 💪🏻 -
Amber Wilson 4/22/2020 6:38 AMI made a stew last night with homemade veggie broth - SO much better than store-bought! -
Amber Wilson 4/21/2020 7:46 AMOne of my fav swaps has been wool dryer balls. They're an amazing alternative to dryer sheets and you can still make them smell lovely with (pet safe) essential oils! I initially stopped using dryer sheets just because of the waste they create - I wasn't even aware of how harmful they can be. Traditional dryer sheets have harsh chemicals in them that vent into the air we breathe and rub off from our clothes and into our skin - eeeeeek! -
Amber Wilson 4/21/2020 6:44 AMHas anyone had struggles with the eco-challenge or sustainable practices in general since we've been quarantined that they'd like to share? -
Amber Wilson 4/21/2020 6:40 AMHey everyone - I hope you all had great weekends! Did anyone get their hands in the soil or repurpose anything? I continued working on the garden and have been repurposing recyclables into seed starters! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Amber Wilson 4/13/2020 1:12 PMMy brain never shuts off - it's important for me to talk things out with people so I don't go into a depression. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Amber Wilson 4/13/2020 11:50 AMAbsolutely! One of the best things coming from this quarantine for me personally is all the time I'm spending outdoors. I'm really hoping to create some new habits around self-care during this time and for me, that is absolutely directly tied to the beauty and mysteries of nature. I know more time indoors/more screen time has negatively affected me in many ways, including a shorter attention span and not having relationships with my neighbors. I've met so many neighbors in the past few weeks! This is a scary time yes, but hopefully you can bring some beauty out of it with you. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Amber Wilson 4/13/2020 8:32 AMHousehold/Individual sustainability education. There are so many small acts that could have huge effects if we all did them together! -
Amber Wilson 4/13/2020 7:57 AMGood Morning y'all! How was everyone's weekend?
