REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Local Climate IssuesIn what ways is your local community resilient to shock events like we’ve experienced recently? How could you help it become more resilient?
Katherine Wojcik 4/30/2020 10:20 PMBeing in the center of the country, a lot of the extreme weather the US has been having has dissipated by the time it reaches us. I am constantly concerned that people in our region do not take climate change seriously because the extreme weather events are not local and it does not hit close enough to home for people to feel the urgency to make changes in our daily routines to mitigate climate change. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Katherine Wojcik 4/30/2020 10:17 PMWhen I am stuck indoors, I miss being outside. I plant both herb and native grass/flower gardens to have an excuse to be outdoors more often when I am stuck at home. I feel that a culture that spends most of it’s time indoors is at a loss and out of touch with their humanity/sense of place in this environment/their world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Katherine Wojcik 4/30/2020 10:13 PMConnecting with people actually stimulates our neurotransmitters/ hormones, and helps us ease psychological discomfort. I could have reached out more recently to avoid some depressing days I have had lately. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Get Involved in the Water Justice MovementWho is affected by polluted water or a lack of access to water in your region? How are they affected?
Katherine Wojcik 4/30/2020 10:11 PMIn my region, as it is for most, the people most affected by water shortages and lack of access to clean water are those of lower economic standing and communities of color. Lack of access to safe drinking water leads to disease, tooth decay, and a myriad of other health issues. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
Katherine Wojcik 4/30/2020 10:08 PMSome nations/communities have different structures/ways of food production, which works better for their environment. Allowing different locations to do what works for them and their environment is important to the sustainability of food production and efficiency.
