Dana's actions
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 6 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a trash pickup at a local river or beach that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
People
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 2 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 10 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
People
Write Letters or Emails
I will write 2 letter(s) or email(s) per day to a public official or company to advocate for planet-friendly and/or environmentally just policies.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 2 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Dana Wynn 4/07/2020 11:26 AMWhat is your household size and how many trash bags do you go through each week? We are a family of 4, 2 adults, 2 kids, 14 and 7 with 1 dog and 4 cats. We fill one trash bag weekly and recycle and compost all we can as well. -
Dana Wynn 4/07/2020 11:23 AMThings are going well considering how little I am actually traveling out given the COVID-19 situation. Our weekly trash remains at 1 bag/week with the remaining items going to compost (egg shells, coffee grounds), worm bin, my Slim Shady dog, recycling, and finally trash. My boyfriend is a plastics recycling specialist and insists we recycle EVERYTHING we can properly as he deals with plastics the same way daily. -
Dana Wynn 3/18/2020 2:59 PMOk folks. This is the STL U.S. Green Building Council group team: usgbc-missouri-gateway-chapter. Let's keep an eye on these folks and perhaps we can bring in and on a challenge!

Dana Wynn 3/18/2020 2:53 PMWow! Just went through and edited my actions on my laptop and not using my phone. Here's the breakdown! 20 actions (some I already do) total. HM,,,, should I do the carbon footprint and water footprint calculators BEFORE, DURING, and AFTER the Earth Day EcoChallenge?! I think so. Link to come in a future post!
I think the most important point to make with and for our team, the REDUCERS, is stressing the importance of REDUCING as the first step in the well-known and often fumbled tri-cycle image for the 3R's, REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE. For this particular event and given the current global situation we are all in, I think we can all come up with creative ideas to share (think Pinterest, posts, links, and MORE).
Use of public transit has been my EcoChallenge priority for the last 3 events we have participated in @ SIUE, but there always seem to be a barrier. More to come! Be on the lookout for an upcoming ZOOM or TECHSMITH RELAY video!!!
