    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

Meat is often the most expensive part of the diet so developing countries can't afford as much in their diet.  They don't have CAFOs and larger livestock facilities that lower the price of meat.  Habitat destruction, methane release, agricultural inefficiencies of raising grain to feed livestock, manure/nutrient runoff and antibiotic use with livestock all impact the planet.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

Nearby paths have been too crowded so I've gone further afield to walk more remote paths.  Got to hear frogs calling in temporary ponds and wetlands and have spotted the early flowers that bees are visiting.

Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?

The aye-aye, a small lemur on Madagascar, has modified digits helpful in feeding.  A thin middle finger is used for tapping and the fourth digit is long and hooked to pull insects out of trees.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

I have always relied on spending time in nature to relieve stress.  Seeing the beauty and diversity among organisms provides inspiration to me.  For those that remain indoors, they lose their connection with natural cycles, food system and the web of life.
