How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

I think that connecting with others, especially right now, is so important for one's emotional health. I've been finding genuine interpersonal connections so reinvigorating and energizing and enjoyable, from phone calls with family members to brief chit chat with grocery store cashiers. It's nice to feel heard and to hear someone else and feel camaraderie with others, but it's also really important to have moments where you feel like you a valued and recognized part of your community, in whatever small way that may be.

Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

That certainly does ring true for me. I feel that the more time you spend outdoors the more you grow to appreciate all the different facets of your environment, and you end up feeling more connected to your surroundings and community. I think that the culture that spends most of its time indoors is more prone to feel disconnected from their community, and is maybe lacking the time for introspection and the realizations that it can bring.

Been trying to slowly move closer and closer to being zero waste (treating it as a marathon, not a sprint), and I keep trying to notice what I throw away often. I have reusable bulk bags which are great, but I notice that I end up throwing away so many of those little bulk twist tags and it drives me nuts! Here's my early attempts at saving and reusing them, hopefully they last decent amount of time before breaking. Fingers crossed!

    1. My name is Adam! I work at Hunter Communications, a regional internet service provider based out of Central Point. I do a little bit of everything over there, from troubleshooting customer issues, to installing equipment on customer sites, to working on a new network monitoring system. Overall I really enjoy my job and like knowing that my works helps serve Southern Oregon, but I do still wish my work could have more of an impact with regards to other things I'm passionate about like the environment.
    2. It doesn't seem like much, but I've been consciously running my heater less throughout the day. During our recent cold spell I tried just wearing more layers instead of turning to my heater to try and conserve energy. I don't really know how much it saves, but I at least feel pretty good knowing I'm doing that, and thankfully the weather seems like it's really warming up again!
    3. I'd say my favorite nature spot (in the region, at least) is Hobart Bluff out off Highway 66. It's a nice quick hike, but the views overlooking Ashland and the valley are awesome. I feel like it's so easy to get caught up in my day to day routine (especially lately since I've been working from home mostly) but going out there and seeing how big and sprawling the valley is helps me ground myself in a sense, and reminds me that there's so much else happening than my little routine.
    4. Absolutely, I've been so surprised and heartened seeing how much less traffic there is all over the world. Seeing images of LA freeways empty (during the daytime no less) was something I didn't think I'd ever see in my lifetime! Personally I still have to go to the office once a week, but overall I'm driving so much less and it feels great knowing I'm saving money and lessening my carbon footprint.

Adam, welcome! So great to meet you! Oh my gosh, I bet you are busy busy right now as an internet service provider. I'm a web designer and it's been wild in the past few weeks. LOVE Hobart Bluff, such a beautiful hike and yes, the views are spectacular! It's been a while, I need to get back there. So glad you're on board!
