Juliana's actions
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 1 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 10 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 20 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Fresh Water
Water-Friendly Beauty Products
Avoid beauty products with micro beads or harsh chemicals that will feed into the ground and your water supply.
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Food
Advocate For More Food Options
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for local and/or organic food options in my state and/or community.
People
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 1 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 3 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.

REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Juliana Accles 4/14/2020 6:16 AMVolunteering builds connections within a community and helps people support each other. It strengthens a community and gives every individual a place within it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Advocate For More Food OptionsWhat efforts would help food insecure regions have access to local, seasonal foods?
Juliana Accles 4/14/2020 6:14 AMCommunity gardens and better city planning can help food insecure regions have access to local, seasonal foods. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Water-Friendly Beauty ProductsBeyond what does or doesn't come out of the tap at home, how do your choices affect freshwater locally and globally?
Juliana Accles 4/14/2020 6:08 AMProducts that I buy and things that I discard can lead to pollutants ending up in water. Water on Earth is one interconnected system so things that effect local water also effect global water to a certain extent. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Juliana Accles 4/14/2020 6:06 AMWe can reduce the amount of water we use by washing dishes by hand, reducing showers, and by flushing less often. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Juliana Accles 4/14/2020 6:04 AMThe most prominent water concerns are flooding and pollution. Biltmore village floods pretty often and a lot of polluted runoff from roads ends up in creeks and the french broad. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Juliana Accles 4/11/2020 7:44 AMLearning how much food people waste surprised me when I first heard it but then I started paying more attention to food waste and it makes sense. I would rather use money saved on food to buy an eno hammock.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Juliana Accles 4/11/2020 7:42 AMI keep a reusable bag in my bike basket so I rarely have to do without a bag. If I forget a bag I can still put things in my bike basket but have to take multiple trips to load and unload groceries. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Juliana Accles 4/11/2020 7:30 AMI learned that grey squirrels are more effective at dispersing seeds because they eat less of the nuts and seeds that they bury than red squirrels. Grey squirrels also eat nuts and seeds with insect larvae first, which leads to the healthier seeds being planted. Grey squirrels carry a disease that they are immune to but that kills red squirrels. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Juliana Accles 4/11/2020 7:16 AMThe ocean supports live by absorbing carbon dioxide, providing food sources for many species, and helping to keep global temperatures more stable. I can help take care of the ocean by causing less plastic waste and other trash that could end up in the ocean. I can also decrease consumption of different products and travel to decrease the amount of oil that is drilled and to decrease global warming that harms marine life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Juliana Accles 4/08/2020 8:47 AMSpending more time outside lets you appreciate the beauty of nature and get a better sense of place from an area. You can learn new things about your surroundings.
