Energy savings for the home office

Now that we're all working from home, energy bills could go up. Take some time to evaluate your home office space (even if it's the kitchen table!). Many utilities offer home efficiency kits (LED bulbs, shower heads, etc.) - visit your electric utilities website to see if they offer any of these solutions. The links below will also help you find energy efficiency opportunities in your own space.

Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates

I will spend at least 15 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.

This was a tough challenge when working from home. I found that I do a lot of things on a regular basis but was unable to start new habits because I haven't been outside much. On the plus side, because of that I relished my walks and that made me very happy.

I haven't been great at checking in recently. I noticed I'm generally not good at that kind of thing. I found something to work on now!

Today is Earth Day! Even more important to take action today - although every day should be Earth Day

It's been hailing today and quite grey outside. I don't think I will be able to go out for a walk today unfortunately.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Fatema Adamji's avatar
    Fatema Adamji 4/13/2020 7:02 AM
I suppose people in less rich countries rely on their livestock for other needs and breeding the animals for meat is costly. Eating more meat affects our environment negatively by increasing production of methane (a greenhouse gas), often leads to deforestation for grazing land thus affecting the planet's ability to cycle carbon dioxide and can also cause movement of disease between species.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate My Carbon Footprint
What was most surprising to you about your carbon footprint?

    Fatema Adamji's avatar
    Fatema Adamji 4/08/2020 10:17 AM
My footprint included my roommates and I noticed that even with the effort I put in, I could do more to help reduce my household impact. It is tough to make changes when you are not the owner of the place but can try make recommendations!

Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Fatema Adamji's avatar
    Fatema Adamji 4/07/2020 8:05 AM
I understand that these dates are now just suggestions and will not make food less safer to eat. The more important one is likely best before dates but it depends on the type of food.

There is so much food waste, and if these dates were more accurate, it would save so much of it! I wish there was an informational flyer that told you how to tell when food was no longer safe to eat!

I joined storytime this morning where one of our senior leaders read a story to our colleagues' children, It was so nice to see their adorable faces and I loved listening to the story. What a fun start to a Friday!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Fresh Water Dishwasher Efficiency
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Fatema Adamji's avatar
    Fatema Adamji 4/03/2020 9:01 AM
By learning ways to reduce water use including shorter showers, reduced flushing during the day ad only running the dishwasher when full, you can teach yourself to be less reliant on large amounts of water

Action Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social Distancing
How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

We had a virtual birthday celebration today for Canada employees where we sang altogether on a Skype call. It was out of sync and not in tune but boy was it fun and the laugh I needed today. I think connecting with others really keeps me happy and I'm hoping sharing some time with others will do the same for them too.
