REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Vivienne Ankeney 4/27/2020 5:45 PMYou can encourage biodiversity with your own actions by feeding birds or other wildlife, composting to enrich the soil, planting trees or other plants. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco TipsWhat environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?
Vivienne Ankeney 4/22/2020 1:12 PMMy favorite environmentally friendly habit is using reusable water bottles and mugs. Its an easy way to cut down on waste and also saves me time and money in the long run. I ensure that I am successful in following this habit by always being conscious of my choices and by avoiding purchasing drinks in disposable containers whenever possible. -
Vivienne Ankeney 4/22/2020 1:09 PMOne of my favorite environmentally friendly habits is using reusable mugs and water bottles, because it not only helps the environment but it also helps me to save time and money! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Forest-Friendly FoodsHow difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Vivienne Ankeney 4/16/2020 12:20 PMFor me, it wasn't very difficult for me to change by diet due to the fact that my family generally purchases food from sustainable sources. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Vivienne Ankeney 4/05/2020 11:04 PMAt home, I already depend solely on reusable mugs for my hot drinks. However, when I go out for coffee I often forget to bring a travel mug and end up getting whatever disposable cup they give me. Although this is not an issue for me right now due to social distancing, once I can go out again I will be more consistent about bringing my own cup. It makes me feel good that there is always more that I can do to help the environment, and even better to know that I am actively working to do those things. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Vivienne Ankeney 4/04/2020 8:17 PMI certainly think that statement holds truth. Although most Americans, myself included, spend the majority of their time indoors, there are some benefits that can only come from outside. Going outside helps people to relax, unwind, and appreciate the world and what it has to offer. Going outside also offers an array of health benefits, both physically and mentally. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Vivienne Ankeney 4/03/2020 5:58 PMMy family already composts, but I have added this to my goals in order to become better at it, because I know that for me personally, I sometimes get lazy and throw away food that I could have put in the compost. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Vivienne Ankeney 4/02/2020 7:06 AMConnecting with other people makes me feel less alone in this weird and isolating time. It helps others do the same, and can act as a relief from the day-to-day anxiety and stress a lot of people are facing right now. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Use a Reusable Water BottleUsing the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?
Vivienne Ankeney 4/01/2020 2:47 PMThe best way to advocate for the wildlife and humans being hurt by the bottled water industry is to entirely stop buying bottled water and encourage others to do the same. Other ways to advocate for the cause include being informed, donating to organizations that support victims or fight for change, and using re-usable water bottles when out and glasses at home.
