Kate Barber 4/30/2020 2:15 PMThis year’s EcoChallenge was especially meaningful and rewarding. It provided a sense of renewed hope and optimism at a time when greatly needed. During a time of global uncertainty, the EcoChallenge showed us we still have agency and the capacity for positive change. Although many of us may be physically separated from one another, collectively we have tremendous power for positive impact for the planet. -
Kate Barber 4/30/2020 12:52 AMOut in the port hills, learning more about the delicate ecosystems helps me feel more connected to my new home-for-now. I see so many opportunities to contribute to help protect this beautiful environment!

Kate Barber 4/27/2020 5:35 AMToday I started composting and recycling again. I’m so glad my new community provides these services! And I’m grateful to the service workers who are putting in the time to get the job done even during these difficult times -
Kate Barber 4/24/2020 12:30 AMDidn’t meet as many of my goals for the day as I’d hoped to (ahem, spend time outside). Mostly because I was busy working. Yet I feel good, because at work, my client made great progress with improving their corporate sustainability reporting. Excited to help move the needle. -
Kate Barber 4/23/2020 12:05 AMTo support a sharing economy, my neighbors and I are sharing bicycles, tools, dishes, a car, vacuum, printer, and more. I feel good that we can team up to use less, buy less, and reduce our environmental footprint. Not to mention, this helps us save money! -
Kate Barber 4/22/2020 3:57 AMCelebrating this Earth Day with reflections on life. That which makes our planet so beautiful and unique. Our environment offers endless opportunities for discovery. Feeling grateful for another day on planet Earth. -
Kate Barber 4/21/2020 12:30 AMWhen I spend time in nature, I feel more relaxed, and it also deepens my passion for protecting the planet. Outdoors, I find inspiration and come up with new ways to be more sustainable, in both my personal and professional life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Kate Barber 4/13/2020 9:15 PMMandatory social isolation has been a positive experience in some ways. It's given us the space to take stock of what's important and reconnect with loved ones we hadn't spoken to in a very long time. I'm certain these conversations have made a positive impact on our mental health, both for us and our families. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Support A Sharing EconomyWhat are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Kate Barber 4/13/2020 9:12 PMWe've recently moved to a property, which is shared with our neighbors. This close proximity has helped us quickly establish social bonds within the community. It has also opened doors for sharing food and household items. It's eliminated the need to purchase several non-essential goods (such as vacuums, yard tools, and dry goods) which we would otherwise have purchased separately for our individual household. I feel great knowing this helps us create less waste! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Kate Barber 4/13/2020 9:06 PMSpending time outdoors nurtures creativity, sparks inspiration, and deepens compassion for others and the natural world. I contend that it's essential for progress around social, economic, and environmental issues.
