Connect Local, Support Local

We encourage teammates to connect to other local green organizations (including each other) and practice supporting local businesses at least once a week. Re-share a post, order curbside, make a donation to your favorite non-profit, or find a local business to make a purchase from! Let’s keep making St. Louis a greener, healthier, and more sustainable place to live, work, and learn! Have other or more specific actions to add to the Connect Local, Support Local Building Resilience Challenge please email Fbrandt@mobot.org.

    Wildlife Support Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

Pollinators are a huge link in our food systems around the world.  They also add so much beauty and interest to our gardens.  They can help increase fruit quality and size.  Our biodiversity increases with pollinators, which in turn increases wildlife food sources.  Domesticated bee populations and native pollinators have been on the decline.  Supporting the needs of pollinators means we are supporting our own food needs and creating greater diversity in the natural world.  It is such a win win!

Being so new to this, I am excited to be learning and understanding how this all works more and more.  I find I get so distracted with daily things, I need to make a real effort to place priority on this challenge in a way that I am happy with. It really is exciting to be a part of this!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    People Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

I would agree, that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development.  I find that the natural world is a great place to both exercise and find a much needed retreat from the craziness of the world.  A culture that spends most of its time indoors will not only be lacking so much that the natural world offers, but those people won't even know what they are lacking, very likely.  Whether just 5 minutes or 5 hours, there are so many interesting and beautiful treasures to be had!

Action Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social Distancing
How does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?

Connecting with others helps me to get my mind off of any possible concerns I am having about things, and broadens my perspective.  This is always so helpful.  Also, even if I don't feel like touching base with others, there is a great satisfaction in hearing how happy others are that you checked in with them.  Helping others, helps us!  It strengthens bonds in our local and greater communities!
