Stephanie's actions
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Climate
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Climate
Local Climate Issues
I will spend at least 10 minute(s) a day researching climate issues or climate solutions in my local area and share with others through my team feed, social media, or conversations with my peers.
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Advocate For More Food Options
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for local and/or organic food options in my state and/or community.
Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local Organizations
I will spend 10 minutes researching local organizations and businesses in my community, then support one of them by writing a testimonial or positive review, ordering curbside, making a donation to my favorite nonprofit, or supporting them in another way.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to Earth
I will express my love and gratitude for our Earth by writing a love letter, poem, or song to Earth.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 5 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.

REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Stephanie Bloink 4/23/2020 6:10 AMSpending time in a new location outdoors can open your eyes to how beautiful our earth is. If you spend time in your neighborhood you will gain a sense of place along with respect for that place. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to EarthWhat are you grateful for about our planet? Share what you created or your general thoughts of love and gratitude with everyone else!
Stephanie Bloink 4/22/2020 10:07 AMI am grateful for how beautiful and resilient our earth is. For example, grass and weeds still try to grow in the cracks of sidewalks. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Research and Support Local OrganizationsWhy is it important to support local organizations and businesses? How does it help to build a more resilient community?
Stephanie Bloink 4/22/2020 10:00 AMIt helps the economy of the community, people don't have to loose their jobs. Local businesses help us in our everyday lives, we should give back. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco TipsWhat environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?
Stephanie Bloink 4/22/2020 9:57 AMInstead of going on drives when I'm bored, I now go on walks or runs. It helps keep me and the earth healthy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
Stephanie Bloink 4/22/2020 9:54 AMI can plant flowers in my backyard that butterflies and bees are known to like. It's a win-win, I have pretty flowers and the bees and butterflies have a new pollen source. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Stephanie Bloink 4/16/2020 10:24 AMThe ocean regulates our climate and produces about 70% of the earth's oxygen. The least I could I do is flush my toilet as minimally as possible and carry a reusable straw around with me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Forest-Friendly FoodsHow difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Stephanie Bloink 4/16/2020 10:19 AMNot too hard, I have always used vegetable oil instead of palm oil and I very rarely drink coffee. Although I do love chocolate, because its yummy and helps with cramps. That was a bit harder to cut out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Stephanie Bloink 4/16/2020 10:14 AMWhen I am home sick I always get depressed since I'm over stimulated by technology. While practicing social distancing, I don't necessarily feel like that though. I have the option to go on walks or play badminton outside for fresh air, helping me feel calm again.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Local Climate IssuesIn what ways is your local community resilient to shock events like we’ve experienced recently? How could you help it become more resilient?
Stephanie Bloink 4/16/2020 10:10 AMLee Health and NCH Healthcare System say there is enough staff and supplies for the projected peak of coronavirus, that will happen in one to two weeks. If Southwest Florida residents increase social distancing practices by 20% hospitalization can be significantly decreased. What we can do as normal citizens is put pressure on our representatives, limit trips to the store, and wash our hands frequently. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Stephanie Bloink 4/16/2020 7:48 AMAt the moment, it is easy to not drive anywhere since I don't have to be at a job or school. Sometimes I would just go cruising to pass the time. Instead I now go on a walk and listen to music. When I go to the grocery store next I will have to take my car, since I can't walk that far with that many groceries.
