Deanna's actions
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Climate
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Deanna Brandt 4/10/2020 3:25 PMSingle use items I use are coffee cups ad plastic bags. I have re-usable coffee cups and bags to use instead of having to use the stores. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Deanna Brandt 4/10/2020 3:20 PMWater is a specific area I want to work on because it is a necessity in life. I reduce my water consumption by using eco- friendly appliances and shower heads. I have a garden in my backyard that uses a micro- sprinkler to conserve water along with not having things such as a pool. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Deanna Brandt 4/10/2020 3:10 PMIt's important to take care of pollinators because they maintain diversity within plants and help reproduce plants. Without them our plants wouldn't be able to spread and provide food as fast or at all. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Deanna Brandt 4/10/2020 2:59 PMWe can spend more time outdoors by finding outside activities such as gardening or a sport. Enjoying your time outside is whats most important since you'll want to be outside more. It makes you feel at home and establishes a sense of place sine your in the area often and enjoy it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Deanna Brandt 4/10/2020 2:57 PMMy transportation reduces CO2 in the area since I am my riding my bike and not using gas. This makes my trip more engaging because I get to see my surroundings more and notice things I didn't see before.
