Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Food
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Katie Callahan 4/30/2020 2:06 PMEating meat has lead to the rise of factory farms, which can provide more meat for cheap. Unfortunately, this has many many negative effects; not only on animal welfare (something very near and dear to my heart) but also environmentally. I personally am trying to eat more plant based. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Katie Callahan 4/26/2020 9:23 PMI think being outside sparks wonder and curiosity, leading one to want to know more about their environment and where they fit in it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Katie Callahan 4/23/2020 4:24 PMOceans act as a sink for carbon dioxide and help control my local climate. I try to take care of ocean health by following the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch and educating others about the ocean. -
Katie Callahan 4/22/2020 4:13 PMHappy Earth Day, everyone! I'm proud of what we've done and know we'll keep on rocking it! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Earth Day Together! Earth Day Action: Share Eco TipsWhat environmentally friendly habit have you most recently implemented? How do you ensure that you are successful in creating or changing a habit?
Katie Callahan 4/22/2020 4:12 PMMy most recent environmentally friendly habit has been trying to use up all of the food in my pantry so it's not going to waste. I ensure that I'm successful by creating a meal plan and really being cognizant of what I have in my fridge/cabinet, and have started making a list of things to use up. These are habits that I am going to continue to do even once the shelter-in-place orders are over. -
Katie Callahan 4/16/2020 2:00 PMI would like to explore more hiking trails in this area (I'm most familiar with hiking in Santa Cruz county), but having some of the parks closed here makes this a little difficult. The one park I wanted to check out is currently closed. I have technically already been to another park that my husband recommended, but I think I'll try to go back and explore a different trail to meet this challenge. Now to figure out when... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Katie Callahan 4/16/2020 1:56 PMSince these dates aren't federally regulated (except for infant formula), it empowers a consumer to feel that they don't have to strictly follow the dates and use their own sense as to whether or not something has gone bad or not. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Katie Callahan 4/10/2020 2:05 PMI wanted to research the Virginia opossum as I was curious as to whether or not they do indeed eat ticks/help remove lyme disease. It turns out that opossums constantly groom themselves and eat up to 90% of the ticks they find on their body, thus removing them from the general tick population and therefore potentially lowering down the rate of Lyme disease (as there are fewer ticks around to give you Lyme disease). Interesting! -
Katie Callahan 4/07/2020 10:12 AMI've been finding it very easy to forget to log in to EcoChallenge every day with all of the other daily distractions going on. I've now set a reminder to myself to do this every day!
I also didn't realize how much meat I was consuming, since I'm finding it difficult to meet the challenge of having a vegetarian meal every day; this is something I need to work on!-
K Chico 4/12/2020 9:41 AMMe too! I know the feeling. <3
