Climate
Local Climate Issues
I will spend at least 15 minute(s) a day researching climate issues or climate solutions in my local area and share with others through my team feed, social media, or conversations with my peers.
Food
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food
Advocate For More Food Options
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for local and/or organic food options in my state and/or community.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 2 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Wildlife
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
Bringing home unique souvenirs from trips you’ve enjoyed is meaningful, and giving people unique gifts from other places is fun. Seek souvenirs and gifts that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Wildlife
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 60 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?
-
annmarie callan 4/30/2020 12:10 PMI joined the HMS ECO CHALLENGE because I value being apart of a community in dealing with these challenges -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research Benefits of BiodiversityHow can you encourage biodiversity by your own actions?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Local Climate IssuesIn what ways is your local community resilient to shock events like we’ve experienced recently? How could you help it become more resilient?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
annmarie callan 4/22/2020 8:49 AMI don’t understand what ‘food sovereignty’ means:/ I would like to understand. -
annmarie callan 4/20/2020 8:18 AMI'm loving being a part of the HMS eco-challenge. Cooking %100 of my meals has made for a huge and healthy compost pile!! -
annmarie callan 4/20/2020 8:17 AMI'm loving this eco challenge! This has been a time of good reflection, and preparing %100 of meals is making for great composting. Thanks HMS!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Advocate For More Food OptionsWhat efforts would help food insecure regions have access to local, seasonal foods?
annmarie callan 4/20/2020 8:16 AMFarms delivering to schools for the hotlunch programs, and delivering to food pantries would help a lot. Also, if the government gave farmers subsidies for the farm to school programs, the farmers would be more inclined to make the effort. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
annmarie callan 4/16/2020 4:50 AMIt’s hard to manage our food plans,
Especially when there are little children in the household. I imagine this time of quarantine is allowing families to assess their household food consumption more closely! I would hope the extra cash is spent in the local communities, especially in support of our artists and small businesses. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
annmarie callan 4/14/2020 6:52 AMI wish I understood the importance of composting when I worked in food service, back in college. I know it's a challenge for restaurants to compost but the payoff for the environment is massive! Congrats to all the local restaurants that compost!!
