Sara's actions
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Forests
Plant Trees
I will plant 1 native tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 20 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 2 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Wildlife
Research Benefits of Biodiversity
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching how biodiversity positively impacts our world and how the loss of biodiversity harms it.
Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Sara Campagna 4/26/2020 7:39 PMGetting outside a lot in this beautiful weather has been so key during this time. Making a point to get together with friends socially distanced to catch up while getting some exercise in nature. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Sara Campagna 4/26/2020 7:32 PMI believe that as humans we are meant to live in community. It is vital to be able to share experiences and emotions, both good and bad, in order to truly feel the full range of emotions. It is essential to feel supported by others, and in turn, to be able to help and offer your own support to others when needed. -
Sara Campagna 4/26/2020 7:06 PMI love these challenges and how they make me think outside the box. I always learn new things and it puts an extra awareness on how I can make a small but positive impact. I'm not checking in as often as I would like, but still completing the actions daily, so it's still a win for the environment! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Sara Campagna 4/26/2020 7:05 PMI have a multitude of produce bags and grocery bags that I keep in my car so that I rarely ever find myself in a position without one. In the case that I do, I carry all my stuff in my arms and probably look like a crazy lady! It's been really hard for me to grocery shop during quarantine because everything is being put in plastic (even at some stands at the farmers market) and we're not allowed to refill containers or bring our reusable bags. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Sara Campagna 4/26/2020 7:02 PMI feel really strongly about the reduction and ultimately elimination of single use plastics. I just think about how much ends up in our ocean, in sea life, and then in our bodies. It is still relatively new to our planet so we have yet to see what the full ramifications our overuse will have. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Sara Campagna 4/26/2020 6:59 PMI think the use of personal grey water systems in all homes could help to make a big impact in the sustainability of water in our region. A lot of education would need to happen and I'm sure changes at the policy level as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Sara Campagna 4/26/2020 6:56 PMSpending time outdoors connects me deeper with the bigger picture. So often I find it all too easy to get caught up in my own little world. Being in nature helps to remind me of how small I am (and thus, my problems) and reinforces my belief in a power much bigger than mankind.
I discovered a new trail in our area (Wonder) and it's beautiful! I am so thankful for all those who helped build it and make it possible. I have shared it with several others so they can enjoy as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Sara Campagna 4/26/2020 6:51 PMIt absolutely rings true for me. I feel most comfortable when in nature and I don't feel "right" when I'm not outside daily. Especially during this time of social distancing, being in nature has been critical for my well-being. It worries me greatly for the majority of the population who doesn't spend very much time outdoors. It seems as though it would not only have negative implications on their well-being, but also a disconnect with nature would likely mean less awareness for the environment and what their actions have on it. -
Sara Campagna 4/20/2020 9:57 AMI am doing most of the challenges daily but I have been so bad about logging in regularly. I’m so sorry, team! The good news is that I’m doing the work which is the most important part. Hoping to tackle my one time challenges this week!-
Ana B 4/21/2020 2:13 PMThat is definitely the most important part Sara, keep up the great job!
