Oceans

Clean up Bay Park!

I will go to Bay Park and clean up the upland tidal area of litter. This is the park that I use and share with a multitude of wildlife species. I want the Earth to be clean and healthy so we can live the best lives possible. We need to learn to respect the planet that we live on. 🌎

Education Nation!

I will teach at least one person a day about a wild animal that they either don’t know about, have received misinformation about or are curious to learn more about! If I don’t know about an animal in question, I will spend my time researching that animal so I learn more and can then teach others!

Wildlife

Wildlife Warrior

I will spend my life fighting for the conservation of wildlife and wild places. My goal is to take one step further each day in expanding my knowledge base and skill set to make a difference in my wildlife and environmental career field. Saving the planet is my passion and I know how important science is. The more people who fight for a cause the more progressive movement is made. It has to start somewhere.

Research a Wild Animal

I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).

Support Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

I live in a place that floods whenever it rains. I also live near a sewage treatment plant. When hurricane Sandy hit, the treatment plant was destroyed and had to be rebuilt. This affected the waterways and the town.

I would like to see more people have duel flushing toilets  so you can control how much water is used. People can try to take quicker showers and shower only when necessary instead of habitually.

I don’t know what the answer is, but we have to stop dumping sewage waste into the oceans. People need to stop using chemicals on their lawns that run into the water system. Learning to wash dishes without the sink running or using an HE dishwasher would be great.

There are so many ways to make a little difference everyday that would lead to big changes going forward.

April is going by fast and I’ve got a bunch of challenges to complete. The pandemic has definitely been a busy time for me so I haven’t had as much time off to do fun nature stuff. I will do my best to complete my challenges!

On my Brant survey yesterday I saw a bunch of other cool birds- one included a glossy ibis which was a new find for me!

Had a discussion with a colleague today about the global waste management system and how it’s broken- but also how the US is still ahead in relation to other countries. I want to fix this issue but need help doing so.

The misnomer “seagull” is applied incorrectly to all gulls across the board. There are several species of gulls on Long Island. The one who stole my vegan crisps was a herring gull.

Today my snack was pilfered by a gull. Wind blew the full, unopened bag of vegan crisps off the hood of my car and the bird carried them off. The perp was chased down but got away when s/he took flight. It was both ridiculous and somewhat hysterical but mostly normal because gulls on Long Island literally forage one the garbage for their meals.

I chose the actions I did because I feel that I love everyday as sustainably as possible- but there is always room for growth. I wanted to try and challenge myself to go a little further. Eco challenge has made me think about a few new ways I can be more sustainable.

Wildlife fun fact for the day: Atlantic Brant love to eat Ulva, more commonly known as sea lettuce. They also enjoy grazing and foraging in upland tidal habitat. They can commonly be seen “charging” each other and giving feisty  nips in the bum. They are both rude and adorable. If you live near the Atlantic coast, now is the time to get out to your local park or tidal outdoor space (observe CDC guidelines for social distancing) and sneak a peek at these birds before they fly off to the tundra for the summer! (They are cold weather birds so they come down
to NY during the winter and spend summers up North!)
