Shannon's actions

Wildlife

Research a Wild Animal

I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Building Resilience

Support Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Building Resilience

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 4 hour(s) in my community helping people who are most at need right now, including elderly and immunocompromised people, people without childcare, and people whose jobs have been affected by social distancing measures.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Building Resilience

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Building Resilience

Spend Time Outside

I will replace 60 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.

DAILY ACTIONS

Oceans

Learn about Our Oceans

I will spend at least 45 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Oceans

Support Organic Growing Methods

I will buy organic cotton and foods grown without the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.

Action Track: Earth Day Together!

Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to Earth

I will express my love and gratitude for our Earth by writing a love letter, poem, or song to Earth.

COMPLETED

Fresh Water

Oil Spill

It is the 10 year anniversary of the BP oil spill. I want to understand more about the current state of the wetlands and wildlife that were impacted by the disaster.

What is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?

Without our oceans, Earth is pretty much dead. I am a volunteer and annual donor with the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition https://oregonshores.org/ doing segments for their Coast Watch program. This is very important to me. Being a human coastal resident I see daily shifts and changes on the coastline including amazing wildlife and plants but also including micro-plastics, trash and other negative human-created impacts. Quarterly recording my miles on Coast Watch documents human influence along our shores, as well as unusual wildlife, changes in creeks, landslides, other erosion, and anything else that may affect the ocean's edge.

YOU GUYS!!! MY BEACH GEESE HAD GOSLINGS!!! This shot is from my run this morning. So cute!
I have to say that with the state park closed, the bird life is thriving. I’m seeing so many migratory species and nesting pairs. It is so wonderful! It does give me anxiety though to think of the parks opening as the babies are all hatchlings...we know how little respect many humans have for wildlife.
    But for now, yaayyyy birds!!!

*For all bra-wearers!* I came across this eco-tip in an advertisement fro Harper Wilde bras on Instagram...I have not tried their bras yet but I certainly like their philosophy and that they offer recycling of your old bras! I am going to try them out for sure...from their web page:  " Now, whenever you order a bra from us, your box will come with a prepaid return shipping label. Place your old bras back in the box, slap on the shipping label, and voila! We take care of the rest."  https://blog.harperwilde.com/recycle-bra/?gclid=CjwKCAjw4pT1BRBUEiwAm5QuRws0T9GytyJ30TU1YYBIyFSUPpfKuOvcUHdC0CRi--2WMLvwIZSfuBoCxtwQAvD_BwE

From what I read, it was exasperated employees who nudged him on in this particular decision. Good on them!

Today is the 10 year anniversary of the BP oil spill. Can you believe it?! Attached is a link to 4 poignant essays discussing the current state of the wetlands and the politics around the disaster. I highly recommend taking the time to read them all. https://www.audubon.org/news/ten-years-later-reflections-deepwater-horizon-oil-spill?ms=digital-eng-email-ea-newsletter-engagement_20200420_wingspan_%5baudience%5d&utm_source=ea&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=engagement_20200420_wingspan&utm_content=%5baudience%5d&emci=57f0b211-0083-ea11-a94c-00155d03b1e8&emdi=f2fd3244-0683-ea11-a94c-00155d03b1e8&ceid=1522873

It is often said that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” What is your response to that statement?

    Shannon Christopher's avatar
    Shannon Christopher 4/18/2020 5:21 PM
Bogus. We have well removed ourselves from the sources of our food. Thinking about the "original food" on this planet, pretty sure there were no pesticides, herbicides or antibiotics involved.

Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    Shannon Christopher 4/16/2020 11:23 AM
We definitely do not want to lose biodiversity within any plant, insect or animal species. Pollinators are key in plant and fruit production and overall health of the planet. I am a bird geek so I always am looking for ways to attract more birds into my space. Planting native plants is the best way to bring health and abundance to birds and insect pollinators. The Audubon Society is always a primary resource for me, and here is a link so you can research what native plants do well to attract these creatures in your area based on zip code  https://www.audubon.org/plantsforbirds
