Ellie's actions
Action Track: Building Resilience
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 3 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 1 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 15 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Ellie Cosgrove 4/01/2020 5:05 PMHi everyone! So glad to "virtually" meet you!
1. My name is Ellie and I am an environmental educator with a background in biology. I am currently working as the Harvest Meal (field trip) Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator for Rogue Valley Farm to School. I am very passionate about teaching people of all ages how to grow their own produce! I am also working with another nonprofit, called Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) to help them plan a teacher workshop for integrating climate change curriculum into the classroom. I love being outside, getting kids outside, and helping them develop connections with the natural world!
2. Since the quarantine, I have not been driving to work, so I am not emitting any greenhouse gases from my car! Instead of driving to meetings, I am doing more virtual meetings, a habit I hope I can continue after this quarantine is over. I have been spending time at home bettering my cat's life (does that count?) and I am gearing up to plant some pollinator-friendly plants on my apartment balcony!
3. My favorite place in nature is probably the Owyhee River canyon in eastern Oregon. It is my dad's favorite place, and he has taken me out there for many years and I have fallen in love with the landscape as well! I love the solitude I can find in the desert <3
4. I have noticed that this quarantine has been extremely beneficial to the environment in terms of lowering air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. I have also seen images of clearer water in various places in the world, as well as wildlife returning to areas where they have been pushed out by people. I think this really shows that we can all make changes in our lives to better the planet. I am concerned, however, about what kinds of environmental laws have been/will be "sneakily" rolled back during this time.-
Erin M 4/01/2020 5:12 PMEllie! It's so awesome to read this and learn about you! Your cat is lovin' it too! : ) Thank you for sharing, and for coming aboard the EcoChallenge. -
Ana B 4/01/2020 5:12 PMEllie, I am worried about the unenforced EPA restrictions as well. Do you happen to know of any actionable steps individuals can take?
