Aspen's actions
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 6 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Oceans
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Plastic packaging can clog our water ways and the stomachs of sea creatures. I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Climate
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 10 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Oceans
Support Organic Growing Methods
I will buy organic cotton and foods grown without the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh WaterUsing the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?
Aspen Coty 4/20/2020 9:00 AMBY voting, singing petitions, donating to environmental causes, and supporting local sustainable businesses. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceansWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Aspen Coty 4/20/2020 8:59 AMI try not to use any of those. If I get takeout, we save the plastic straws they give us and recycle everything. We try and refuse plastic bags as much as possible, if we cannot, we use them for something else later on. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceansIt is often said that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” What is your response to that statement?
Aspen Coty 4/20/2020 8:57 AMI agree, right now, organic food is not accessible to all demographics and/or countries. Some people can only get what they get, they may not have a choice because of cost, or there may literally not be another option like organic.
Environmentalism can be quite elitist at times, especially expecting everyone to eat/buy clean, organic products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimateHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Aspen Coty 4/20/2020 8:56 AMBy walking more I am more actively engaged in my community in a more direct way, seeing faces and interacting with the community, people, and places around me. By driving, you are shut off from the world and don't have to engage with other people directly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
