I've replaced soaps in my house with bar soaps to reduce plastics. I have also cut down on handwashing and instead using dishwasher when it's full.

This COVID-19 situation is very disheartening when I have very little opportunity to get outside. Researching and watching nature docs make it a little better though :)

    Wildlife Support Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

Pollinators are a HUGE contribution to the quality of life for many of us, human and wildlife alike!

    People Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

Mayra De Leon 4/07/2020 4:06 PM
This definitely rings true for me. Especially because without experiences the natural world, we wouldn't be able to comprehend how our own lives affect everything around us. The implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors are that the connection about what we learn indoors, in the classroom, online, is wasted if we can't connect it to our effect on the natural world.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Oceans Support Organic Growing Methods
It is often said that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” What is your response to that statement?

    Mayra De Leon's avatar
Mayra De Leon 4/07/2020 1:45 PM
My response is that, that statement seems to come from big business. There is a larger part of human history where all food was organic rather than not. Because of overproduction in wealthier countries, large amounts of food go to waste. As the human population grows, big business is right there to market their product. This doesn't have to be the case.

Food Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
How does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?

    Mayra De Leon's avatar
Mayra De Leon 4/07/2020 1:20 PM
Food sovereignty is about bringing economical sustainability to communities and giving them the agency to control their food market. Modern food systems typically take more from rural communities than give back. The documentary I watched was about Food Sovereignty in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNbsmOmgre4
