Reed 's actions
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Fresh Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Fresh Water
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 2 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals. If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Climate
Earth Day Action: Write a Love Letter, Poem, or Song to Earth
I will express my love and gratitude for our Earth by writing a love letter, poem, or song to Earth.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Climate
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Fresh Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Forests
Plant Trees
I will plant 1 native tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a trash pickup at a local river or beach that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Reed Di PIerno 4/26/2020 7:55 AMI wouldn't say there is a specific area I need to work in terms of ecological problems. I feel I could help out more by polluting the air less by using less fossil fuels. By traveling less on a daily basis, the earth would be benefiting. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Reed Di PIerno 4/24/2020 10:54 AMIn a situation where I don't have reusable bags, I could always use paper bags instead because they are not as bad as plastic. This way I will have an alternative that doesn't affect the environment as negatively. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Reed Di PIerno 4/24/2020 10:08 AMOceans support my way of life on Earth by providing me with an unbelievable source of food with all the fish they provide. I can help take care of these oceans by doing my part and keeping them clean, while promoting others to do the same. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Reed Di PIerno 4/24/2020 10:06 AMCleaning up my community with the help of other volunteers makes me feel great because while I'm giving back to my community, I'm also giving back to the Earth as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Reed Di PIerno 4/24/2020 9:59 AMDuring this Ecochallenge I have planted one tree. By doing this, not only does it make me feel good, it allows the tree to be apart of a new environment. It felt good to give back to the Earth and provide it with new life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Forest-Friendly FoodsHow difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Reed Di PIerno 4/24/2020 9:55 AMIt wasn't that bad changing my diet, considering I only tried doing it for a couple of days. It was definitely a different way of living, so I'm glad I tested it out for a little bit of time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Reed Di PIerno 4/24/2020 9:53 AMBy spending more time outside in a certain environment, you become more aware of whats around you, then you had previously done before -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Reed Di PIerno 4/24/2020 9:50 AMThis does not surprise me at all, although it is very sad. Individuals could be spending this wasted money on anything else. They could be spending money on their houses, on their family, going on vacation, putting it in the bank, etc.
