Climate

My Carbon Footprint

Use an online tool (links below) to calculate my carbon footprint and see what changes would make the most difference. Each calculator varies, but you'll typically need to gather: utility records, the flight history for the last year, and annual mileage and fuel efficiency of your vehicles.

Energy savings for the home office

Now that we're all working from home, energy bills could go up. Take some time to evaluate your home office space (even if it's the kitchen table!). Many utilities offer home efficiency kits (LED bulbs, shower heads, etc.) - visit your electric utilities website to see if they offer any of these solutions. The links below will also help you find energy efficiency opportunities in your own space.

Fixing Leaks

I will fix my leaky fixtures in my home. We recently moved into our home and found the one shower, the kitchen faucet and two toilets were leaking water. I will fix these. The reason I'm choosing this, is because we have been wasting water and heating energy for months. I measured that the shower/tub spout was leaking at a rate of roughly 5 gallons per day, and over that when not tightened all the way.

What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

A sustainable future in my region would consist of planning for localized food growth and distributions. Having move here from locations that had much greater diversity in agriculture, it appears that there is a large dependence on food stuff from outside of the region, I believe  bio-diverse crops that would grow and harvest all year round, and learning to cook and plan with those would help the sustainability of the region.

How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

While our region has an abundant supply of fresh water, I think it is imperative that we as a family understand the big picture issue and decrease our dependency on fresh water where grey water or no water can be used.
