REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Forest-Friendly FoodsHow difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Hannah Engels 4/17/2020 2:45 PMIt is very difficult to change your diet especially since I am in a house where I don't make a lot of decisions regarding food but now that I have more facts about why certain foods are bad, hopefully I can inspire change in my household. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Hannah Engels 4/10/2020 7:23 PMThe cost of producing meat is high so richer countries eat more meat than poorer countries. If we eat more meat, it means that we raise more animals which means that there are more emissions from the animal itself, from feeding and housing the animal, and killing and processing the animal. The more meat we eat, the more emissions that go with it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONForests Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Hannah Engels 4/06/2020 7:09 PMBeing outdoors puts things into perspective for me. To be outside in a world much larger than myself, especially in a time like this, really helps ground my emotions and it helps me look at the bigger picture. Being outside helps me complete my daily routine with more ease than I would have if I just spent all of my time inside. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Hannah Engels 4/03/2020 9:21 AMConnecting with people supports my mental and emotional health because it grounds me in reality. If I didn't have conversations with other people, I would get into very unhealthy places mentally as I just shut down. Humans are pack animals, we need connections with other humans to have happy, healthier lives, -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Hannah Engels 4/01/2020 9:06 AMI love being outside. Being able to see the world continuing to move around me even in this weird time really helps me stay grounded when I have to stay home. To be a culture that stays inside all the time is just sad. Being outside improves health and mood. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Use a Reusable Water BottleUsing the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed - both humans and wildlife - by this bottling process?
Hannah Engels 4/01/2020 8:58 AMThe best way to advocate for change is to show other people the negative impacts that your issue has on the environment and life that lives in it. The bottling company Nestle, is draining the Strawberry Creek run in California. To get them to stop, you need legislation that makes it difficult to drain the water and to get legislation, you need people to be educated on the issue so that they can push for restricting laws to protect the water and the land.
