Tammy's actions
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including monarch butterflies, to produce fruit. I will spend 45 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Wildlife
Research a Wild Animal
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about a wild animal I find interesting, including their life cycle, habitat, ecosystem functions, and interactions with humans (if any!).
Climate
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Fresh Water
Dishwasher Efficiency
I will scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 4 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 2 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
Climate
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Climate
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 1 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Action Track: Earth Day Together!
Earth Day Action: Share Eco Tips
Through social media or on the Earth Day Ecochallenge feed, I will share my favorite environmentally friendly habit with my friends, even if it’s not an Earth Day action.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a trash pickup at a local river or beach that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Tammy Fisk 4/02/2020 11:23 AMSeeing the impact of my actions on a daily basis helps me to feel a little better about being "stuck" inside. I also try to practice "three good things" in my life by listing three things I have either accomplished that day or am grateful for. Any positivity helps to keep me in a good frame of mind. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Tammy Fisk 4/01/2020 10:14 AMCoffee cups are a big item used on jobsites. By bringing a reusable cup (I love my tervis mugs) in and washing it out in the sink, we can reduce waste and costs. for plastic bags at the store, a simple tote could be used. A lot of local stores even give a small credit back to you for using these bags or they sell reusable bags and donate the money to charity. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Tammy Fisk 4/01/2020 10:12 AMBy switching to remote working through the covid crisis, we are proving to ourselves that working remotely can still get the work accomplished. It is certainly more difficult but with extra communication measures, we are resilient enough to accomplish great things! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Research a Wild AnimalWhat interesting facts did you learn about the animal you researched? What are some of your favorite things about this animal?
Tammy Fisk 4/01/2020 10:06 AMDolphins are one of a few animals that a shark fears. They are friendly and curious in nature and love to play in the wake left by boats. The largest dolphin is the Orca and can be up to 32 feet long and weigh up to 6 tons. They are a social animal and live in pods with a dozen or more of their kind. They communicate via echolocation and is believed to have their own "language" much like humans do. They are warm blooded mammals and nurse their young. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Tammy Fisk 3/30/2020 9:55 AMI would rather use the money spent on wasted food for things like vacations or family experiences that can make memories. Planning our meals helps eliminate waste as well as keeps us in line with portion control. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Connect While Social DistancingHow does connecting with others help your own mental and emotional health? How can it help support others?
Tammy Fisk 3/30/2020 9:53 AMI never realized how social I was until I was not able to be anymore. It has been helpful for me to connect with others to know that I am not alone and that by reaching out I am also helping to remind others they are also not alone. We are in this together and will be stronger by supporting each other. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Tammy Fisk 3/30/2020 9:51 AMHoney from local sources can help with fighting environmental allergies in that area.-
Monirupa Ananya 3/30/2020 12:40 PMAgreed! Keep going Tammy.. You are doing great.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFresh Water Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Tammy Fisk 3/30/2020 9:47 AMNot only do we wait to run items when they are full like the dishwasher and laundry, we also are teaching our children that we can re-use our glasses instead of getting a new one each time we refill our drink if we are drinking something similar.
