Jorjanne's actions
People
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 60 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside that follows CDC guidelines for preventing disease spread.
People
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day while following the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
Bringing home unique souvenirs from trips you’ve enjoyed is meaningful, and giving people unique gifts from other places is fun. Seek souvenirs and gifts that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Forests
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area while following CDC guidelines for social distancing.
Climate
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 2 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Oceans
Learn about Our Oceans
I will spend at least 120 minutes learning about how our oceans support life on Earth by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and providing habitat, food, and jobs.
People
Connect While Social Distancing
I will connect with at least 8 person/people a day through phone call or video chat to support mine and other’s mental and emotional health during this challenging time.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlife Seek Alternative Gifts and SouvenirsHow do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?
Jorjanne Flake 4/17/2020 4:04 PMThis challenge goes hand in hand with the "leave no trace" idea.
The choices of even just one individual effect the wildlife community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Jorjanne Flake 4/17/2020 3:58 PMPicking up liter makes me feel connected with the community because I am putting a effort to keep my community clean. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOceans Learn about Our OceansWhat is one way in which oceans support your life on Earth? What is one way you can help take care of ocean health with your actions?
Jorjanne Flake 4/14/2020 8:30 AMThe ocean provides us with oxygen that we breath. One way I can take care of the ocean is by not using plastic bottles/ straws. -
Jorjanne Flake 4/14/2020 8:28 AMI am really enjoying this challenge. I like the flexibility of the options to choose. They are practical ways of saving the earth even while in quarantine. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPeople Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Jorjanne Flake 4/14/2020 7:58 AMI agree with this quote. As a lot of skills and knowledge can be found in informational videos and books, I believe that more comes from real life experiences. It is key to grow character by getting out into the world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Jorjanne Flake 4/14/2020 7:56 AMI am not surprised by this statistic. After attending the Food Banquet I saw first hand how much food is wasted. $1,500 is a lot of money that could be used to pay my college tuition.
